Kazunori Yamauchi on Track Design, Mobile Apps, Greenwood Roadway, and Bad Piggies

In addition to GTPlanet’s exclusive interview with Kazunori Yamauchi, where we discussed Gran Turismo 6 engine sounds and artificial intelligence, I also had the opportunity to attend a round-table discussion with him and a group of other journalists.

He discussed car selection, original track design, GT6’s new mobile applications, and clears the air about Greenwood Roadway, that mysterious, abandoned racetrack in rural Iowa which bears a striking resemblance to Gran Turismo’s Deep Forest Raceway.

What drives your decision making process when you choose which cars to include in a new version of the game?

KY: “The first factor is if a car has historical significance, whether the car is something that is really considered a ‘treasure’, sort of. And, of course, the newest cars, and the sexy cars!

“Also, some of the cars we just come across by chance – they just come from out of the blue – and those cars are selected just because we have ties to it somehow.

“Sometime we go out searching for cars, but sometimes car manufacturers will show us their new cars and say ‘Hey, we have this, are you interested?’ If we end up really liking that car or end up liking the people involved in that car, we will often select it to be included.”

One of the new original tracks announced was Matterhorn. How has your approached to original track design evolved over the course of the franchise? How do you do things differently these days?

KY: “The tracks in GT1 and GT2, most of them were just designed by myself. It was just me designing those tracks, so I could do whatever I wanted!

“Looking at it now, I realize it is really tricky or strange terrain that we often laid the track on. I still like the tracks like that, but now, we have several teams of people working on a single track. Of course, with the photo realism of the tracks we build now, the requirements are much higher than they used to be.

“I think that’s one of the reasons why even though it’s an original course, we started basing them on real-world environments. The Yosemite course we had in the past was like that, because when you work with a very large team, it’s a lot easier to work if you have a single clear goal you are all working towards.

“But I think that, for myself, that’s not enough. I would like to see more fantasy tracks, and I think we will make more fantasy tracks in the future as well, and bring up the level of the tracks so they are more photo realistic, so it’s fantasy but looks real.”

Regarding tracks, you may have heard there is a track in Iowa, Greenwood Roadway, which is very similar to Deep Forest. What are your thoughts on that?

KY: “Ahhhh! Yes, it’s really by accident. I was really surprised when I saw your article.

“Back when we were making Deep Forest, going outside of the country to data capture a track was just out of the question.”

One of the interesting things at E3 this year has been the proliferation of companion mobile and tablet applications, and that’s one of the features you’ve already announced will be included with GT6. What are some of the things that you are hoping to accomplish with the mobile apps, and where do you want that functionality to go in the future?

KY: “I can’t really go into details yet, here at E3, but in GT5 there were a lot of online features of which just the community feature was missing. We really want to support that well in GT6, and we realize that in managing and interacting with the community, you don’t necessarily have to be using a PS3 for it.

“I think a smartphone or a PC or a tablet is much more suited for this purpose. That’s why we want to support that.

“I’m also concerned about balance when we actually implement these features, because GT6 is not a “social game” – it is a driving simulator. We want users to be satisfied with these features and appreciate them without screwing up the balance of the game.

“We’ll go into more details on this at another opportunity.”

Besides making the game even more realistic than it’s been in the past, is there anything about the culture of motorsports or racing that’s changed in the last few years that you’re looking to capture in GT6?

KY: “I think this is another thing that we’re not really able to get into details at this time, but one of the major themes of GT6 is that edge effect of how we affect the car industry and other industries around the world, and how they affect us as well.

“When these ecosystems intersect with each other, you get some very interesting results and new things are born from them.

“That’s something that we have focused on in GT6, and is sort of outside the evolution of a normal racing game, but that’s something that kind of opens up new possibilities and brings up a lot of new and interesting things for people to experience and that’s what our focus is on.

“We’ve done things like improved the rendering engine and improved the physics, and that’s a very important part of the core of the game, but we want to both keep the basics in line and updated properly while branching out into new fields like that as well.

“As I mentioned earlier, in addition to working on the physics engine, rendering engine, AI, and sound simulation, we are really working to a higher target for these things, and one of these days we will be able to show everyone the outcome of what we are able to achieve.”

What feature of GT6 are you personally most excited to see implemented?

KY: “It might be a strange answer, but making Gran Turismo kind of made me realize again just how fun cars are, and you never grow tired of them, and I feel that every day.”

Do you guys ever look for inspiration outside of the racing genre, or draw inspiration from places aside from other racing games?

KY: “I think so, because I love my iPad and my iPad games – I play a lot of those!  I think Bad Piggies is a really cool game!

“I think if I saw that game when I was in elementary school, I think it would be one of the favorite games of my entire lifetime! I was even playing that before I went to sleep last night!”

Man, thes comments make me want to play gt 2! My gt disc doesnt load tho :( might have to whip out gt4.

  2. MLRSparco

I hope they modified the replay and photo mode system for GT6,one thing I would love to see is a slow motion button,I’d love to see a car go around a turn with the new physics engine.I’d also like to see them take out the frame that they put over the view finder i’d rather they just use the whole screen as the view finder, allowing to toggle on/off the on screen interface would be cool to.A gyro cam on the hood or roof of the car would also be a great feature.

These are just a few small things that would make the game that much better.

    1. SZRT Ice

Epic ideas man. The replay mode has been one of my favorite parts of Gran Turismo since the 1st installment. It’s what gave so much visual life to all the work the PD team has done.

This caught my attention from the above interview:

“KY: “The tracks in GT1 and GT2, most of them were just designed by myself. It was just me designing those tracks, so I could do whatever I wanted!”

It made me realize another reason GT has lost so much of its flare to me. I understand the need for “Real World” tracks. The 1st time I played Laguna Seca, then seen it in real life was a treat. But the greatest things to grab your attention from GT1 to GT2, 3 & 4 were the Original Tracks.

Where most Real World Race tracks are set in “similar looking, sometimes barren environments, every Original Track felt new, unique and different. From Seattle, to Midfield, Hong Kong to Swiss Alps, Chamonix to Citta Di Aria, Costa Di Amalfi, and the list goes on. Each track felt refreshing and held their own presence with great visuals and landmarks. Which is also part of what made watching the replays so great.

I would like GT to add a new layer of dynamics to the tracks. Something that brings the tracks to life with movement and unpredictable changes that can even take place if you pulled over and parked your car.

I’d like it to feel as if I’m racing through a living environment and not a still life painting. It might sound reminiscent of past forum complaints, but we should get some tree movement, some rippling water/waves, some moving clouds, uh… Idk, some birds, planes, and helicopters or something. Just stuff to make the race feel alive.

The tracks also need more LAYERS. On the side of the tracks, you may have like ONE layer of actual trees and then a IMAGE behind it of trees and brush that you likely wouldn’t really notice without an HDTV. But it is noticeable. It diminishes the sense of speed, the sense of space, and the sense of depth. Like if there were some trees behind those trees. Or if there were distant objects that you could see through the blur of close objects. That you could use as a marker for break points, apexes, etc.

It would also intensify replays and add depth to the photo mode. I can’t really explain this without using visual examples, but it would definitely improve the game imo, if the tracks were 1/2 as premium as the cars…

    2. MLRSparco

Awesome ideas,I was also thinking about how they could improve the track,I posted in an older article on how it would be cool to have leaves coming off the trees an onto the track, with a track like the Green Hell leaves on the track are very dangerous so it would be cool to have wind placing leaves around the track,it also will look really cool passing over the leaves and having them fly up in the air.

    3. SZRT Ice

Another cool feature. Agreed. Tracks should be seasonal as well. Green and lively in the summer. Pristine and white or barren and desolate in the winter. Fog, and thunderstorms in the spring. Colorful amber, yellow, and orange fallen leaves in the fall. Or it could obviously be adjustable via a settings menu. Either way, it’d be cool.

    4. MeanElf

Don’t get carried away too much lads, I think those would be a consideration for GT7 with more processing power and the ability to handle more going on around you.

Where 24 hour weather options are on a track, it already shows some amazing differences in atmosphere. Seasonal differences would definitely be a massive bonus. I’m guessing by the one screen capture of Autumn Ring that leaves on track will already be present in GT6 and a formation of flying birds have been spotted there too.

      The rest though will come.

    5. ScotteDawg

      All brilliant ideas and comments!

I have noticed though, on some tracks, if a corner is taken a little sideways (especially while drifting) the tyre smoke “blows” in different directions. Could it be that PD already tried implementing that feature to some degree?

Yes, the replay feature had it ALL over other racing games – up to GT4! In GT5 there was a change… Scrolling through the other cars is now very time consuming. You can’t just use the D-pad anymore, you have to nominate the car from the list which in turn means all the on screen data comes back up! IMO, bad move PD!

Re Photo Mode:- Most people now have a widescreen TV, so why, when widescreen is chosen by the operator, does the camera revert back to the old box version for the next set? I would like to see that fixed!

    6. Halcyon925

It would be cool in Replay Mode to hear the car’s engine sounds, bouncing off the walls, while the sound gets seemingly louder as your car rushes past the camera. Basicly, a lot louder than what we hear in GT5’s Replay Mode while a car passes by.

    1. Pit Crew

I conquer, Ill probably wait 6 months to get the PS4. Ill catch up on some of those PS3 games I like but haven’t played yet.

  3. Rafael F

It’s weird but I’m more excited for GT6 than for ps4.
Honestly I will buy the ps4 when GT7 comes out, just like i did with the ps3.

    1. ScotteDawg

      Not weird at all…
PS3 still has life in it and the fact that GT6 (among other games) is coming out on that platform is added proof of that!
Unless you REALLY WANT any of the titles being released for the PS4, the PS4 is useless!
IMO, Sony got ahead of themselves. Only by about two years but…

      BRING ON GT6!!!

    2. Sean24

Sony is playing it smart by having releases for ps3 still. In these times many people won’t be able to just up and buy the next gen system, and Sony have always released titles on their older systems long after the new model is out.

I just wish we had backward compatability:-(

  4. XxDARKRAIX

Do any of you know how much a ps3 will be after the ps4 comes out. I’m guessing about $120 but I was wondering what you guys thought.

    1. ScotteDawg

If you are in Australia, try Cash Converters. They ARE rip off merchants but still have some good stuff!

  5. NeuroticVows

You know what I just realized. I remember a long time ago Kaz announced Gran Turismo For Boys in 2004 and then never came out and at one point said he would like to implement it as a feature in GT5. To this day there is no mention of it at all. I don’t even remember what the concept for the game was. I just remember the title

  6. Kratos_Q8

the new 200 cars do some of them include the cars that turned from standard to premium ? or are they brand new cars that we never saw before ?

    1. MeanElf

New cars as these are in addition to the GT5 list – though it’s not clear if cars from older games aren’t amongst them, I doubt that though – they could be offered as a part of the DLC.

    2. The Stig Farmer

Cars upgraded from standard to premium do no add to the total car list. The GT website lists cars that are new to GT, and the upgraded Countach isn’t on that list.

  7. SZRT Ice

Can’t help but wonder WHEN we will have a FULL BLOWOUT of ALL GT6 INFO and a RELEASE DATE. Seriously just want to know already.

    Vinyls/Livery Editor

Come on Kaz, we won’t tell noBOBEH! ;-)
IT WON’T HURT TO TELL US!

Seriously though, tell us. We wanna know…

    1. ScotteDawg

Why should ANYONE tell us what the GT6 content is going to be? We weren’t told anything about any of the previous games in the GT series, why start now!?
So far, we have a vague idea of the UI and the handling in the demo, but that’s it!
We have seen about 15 of the 200 cars going in to the complete version of GT6 and we know that the handling will be the same as the demo!

THE COMPLETE GT6 IS A FREAKING SURPRISE!!! DEAL WITH IT!!!

    2. phil_75

What do you mean “Why should anyone tell us?”
Because its a game and your purchase is decided on what content it contains.
If YOU don’t wanna know then don’t come here but i’m guessing everyone else does thats why they come here.
Why did you come to the article on GT6 if you “don’t want to know?”

    3. Sean24

I’m not buying til I know whats in it. If its gonna be another game with 80 percent gt4 content, I’m out. Or I will buy it used but I’m definitely not paying PD full price for another 20 percent ps3 / 80 percent ps2 game.

    4. MeanElf

Very few people seem to base the purchase decision on the car list for GT games – it’ll be a wait, sure but time will pass and the game will be here. The true excitement will be the discovery from that time on.

@Sean – that is just very sad and uninformed. You might as well say PS1 as the tracks which everyone seems to want from older games, will always be a part of this series – at least judging by the past four follow ons of the original.

If it’s the cars you mean – can’t help you there. Personally, a lot of them have become old friends now. I know their quirks and enjoy seeing how they develop with each new physics model and image upgrade. You can’t have been aware that the standards apparently would look a lot better this time…

    5. Sean24

@MeanElf – I am talking about cars. The premium / standard cars is an issue for me. Why in the world are the WWII nazi cars premium? Who wanted those in a Gran Turismo game? Why not, oh I don’t know, a Jeep? Certainly that was more of an epic world changing car than the nazi cars. GT5 just seemed so haphazardly put together to me.

Personally, I would just rather wait til GT6 is released, watch some game play videos, read reviews and then I will decide if I want to hand over my hard earned cash.

    6. MeanElf

Sean, those were German WWII vehicles, there is a distinction between Wehrmacht, being the national army, and SS which was full of card carrying Nazis. Not all German soldiers during WWII therefore were Nazis and those vehicles were used by engineer units and officers respectively.

GT4 Had the Mercedes Benz Motor Carriage from 1880 (or something like that) while other GT games have had similar outfield choices – it’s a part of what PD do – as is the hapahazard thing. Historic relevance is therefore there as VW were to create the beetle’s forerunner at around the same time (1937) which due to the war became the Kubelwagen.

Yeah, best wait though to see how the former ‘standards’ look in GT6 – I’m quite sure that they will look improved due to the promise of allowing them into photo travel locations.

    7. ScotteDawg

      ^+1000 MeanElf

@phil_75 – I came here because the title of this particular article said NOTHING about car lists or any of the other stuff mentioned by SZRT Ice! As MeanElf says, “very few people seem to base the purchase decision on the car list for GT games”, to which I agree! In my opinion, it is only the lesser applauded titles that feel the need to release car lists in order to suck people in… So, keeping all of this in mind, why are YOU in here? You’re not going to find out what cars are going to be in the game…!

    1. MeanElf

Custom parts for each car (excepting racecars presumably) but not extensive customisation options like widebody kits such as some seem to be taking as being in the game, at least from a few comments I’ve seen so far.

Correct me if I’m wrong though.

    2. SZRT Ice

I get the feeling the only added CUSTOMIZATION will be more SPOILERS/WINGS and RIMS. Hopefully I’m wrong on this one.

    3. drag lab 101

      @ SZRT Ice….
That’s exactly what I’m thinking too.
It’ll be different style carbon bumper lips front and back with more options but I’d guess not many more. If we are lucky perhaps we would get a side skirt option on some cars. Maybe more extension options and I’m guessing a lot more wheel and wing options… I’m expecting that to have the biggest range of options, wheels & wings.
I’m hoping for a livery of some kind.
I really don’t see them giving us the designing option like Forza.
I’m guessing if we get it at all it’ll be predetermined designs with perhaps a color option on select cars. But who knows… Just my guesses & ill see when it’s released what I/we actually get.

    4. SZRT Ice

A viny/livery editor and more in-depth body/rim customization are two things GT needs to enter near perfect category. If there were some more diverse original tracks, some free roam, and better replay tools/options. GT would be 110% untouchable.

  8. biftizmo

You gotta give to the man…he was doing this before copy and paste was available…and still is to some extent..Respect!!!

  9. Blood*Specter

Well Kaz said he’s going back to basics. Hopefully he’s realized that the ability to Race Mod the majority of non racing cars is going to blow people away. Especially those who never experienced GT 1,2,and 3. And yeah a Caddy CTS-V and Racing variant would be sweet.

And for those of you who do not like my USA chant, hear this; I’m a Marine and if I want the chant USA, I damn sure will.
But ask yourself this question, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT? Pencil neck…………

    1. phil_75

Well if you’re a marine we don’t have to do anything, you dumbasses will take yourselves out with “Blue on Blue” lol

    2. MeanElf

“And for those of you who do not like my USA chant, hear this…”

I couldn’t help thinking of Team America when I read that…

    1. OutOfBoredom

The HachiRoku w/ bodykit options would just make my dad go crazy ;) (He’s an AE86 owner, and a Gran Turismo fan)

    1. MLRSparco

I’d rather know before the game comes out, depending on the cars I may or may not buy the game ,the selection of bimmers in GT5 was pretty bad and the fact that you couldn’t turbo or supercharge them made it worse.

    2. ScotteDawg

Well, if you won’t buy the game because you don’t know what’s in it, you won’t be missed!

But let me ask you… Do you know the FULL content of ANY game that is released? NO! Only the developers and publishers know the full content before release!

So, don’t chuck a tanty over it, just go out and buy the game when it’s available and be happy with what you get like everyone else who’s buying the game!!! As with the rest of us, YOU are not special – regardless of what your mommy told you – and the people behind all games know this. They will tease us with hints as to what might be in a game, but they’ll never tell us everything about it!

THE FINAL VERSION OF GT6 IS A SURPRISE! DEAL WITH IT!!

    3. MLRSparco

Seriously dude you need to chill the hell out no ones throwing a “tanty” lol and there are a lot of games that release their car lists before their games have been released so you feel pretty stupid,I never said anything about wanting to know everything about the game because its a racing game how much could they really hide but cars, track, and upgrades.A small list containing 100 cars would be cool, never said I was demanding, just asking.

    4. SZRT Ice

Disrespectful. Typical GTPatrol antics. Trying to shut down people’s opinions with your superior points of view with a side of belittlement the whole way. It’s comments like these that make me sometimes come off aggressively or as sort of a d0uc#3 to thwart off the Opinion Patrol Squad.

If he or I decide not to get GT6 before it’s released, we WILL BE MISSED. I have friends and groups of people in racing leagues on PSN who are looking forward to my presence in future racing titles. More so, we ARE SPECIAL. Anyone who has an opinion, speaks up,and stands on it are responsible for changing the future. It encourages others to do the same. For all you know, his comment has effected thousands as it set a thought in ONE persons mind who spoke about it to others who then did the same. EVERY ONE OF US IS SPECIAL AND RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CHANGES OR LACK THERE OF IN NOT ONLY GT, BUT THE WORLD. Now I’m throwing a tanty. Now back to your regularly schedule b#$tch slapping.

  10. Neilson248

would love super touring cars from late 90s plus porsche supercup. Not to mention tv-style replays. And yes I know there is a wish list forum thingie just wanna start convo.

  11. phil_75

    Talk talk talk…. Zzzzzz!
He talked up GT5 for years saying it was gonna be the best thing ever!
You’re only as good as your last game, so stop with all this jetting around the world try be a wannabe race driver, its too late mate, and concentrate on getting that feeling and SOUND across to us!!!

    1. Neilson248

if it wasnt for Kaz, sim racing wouldnt be where it is now. Yes thats right, Gran Turismo is the grandfather of all sim-racing games because Kaz and PD were the first ones to really take sim racing to the next level. iRacing, Project Cars, Forza, Assetto Corsa and all other sims exist only to dethrone GT as the king of all sims, which is great for us so anyone who just sits at home trying to tell this man how he can do better is quite sad frankly.

    2. Flagmo-T

Bull !! Neilson – GT has done a great Job – But don’t kid yourself others are in front as well, and has been at the same time as P.D – some are even much further then GT – so Nope .. The latest titles you are referring to is great alternatives to GT, but before them there were several other titles going 100% Sim, not like GT that is a Mix up between the two ..

    3. infamousphil

Timing is everything Neilson. I was well on my way to programming mine own driving sim. With Road&Track, Car and Driver and MotorTend and other magazine stats dating back to the 60s in hand when GT was released to the public. I was not alone in wanting more realizm from the arcade racers. Kaz just beat us to it. And did an outstanding job too. Hats off to him. I’m glad he was the one. Because of his passion for cars and art. But if he hadn’t… who knows?

    4. Neilson248

@Flagmo-T – I’m going back to the days of GT1 here… Who was out there when GT1 arrived back in 1998? Nobody. GT1 was in a league of its own and it gave birth to sim racing as we know it now. So therefore, it is the Mother of sim racing not the grandfather. Remember that when GT3 came out, it was called “The Most Beautiful Game” up to that point and PDs began building a reputation for visual excellence. It was only until GT4 came out in 2004 that others started to get their act together and then you saw the likes of RBR popping up in the same year which was really only the only game giving GT a hard time. Forza only popped up in 2005 but was like an unwanted clone-wannabe of GT. In the same year we saw the release of live for speed which was and still is a genuinely top sim, some might even say better than GT.

Other top sims started appearing just before 2010 with NetKar Pro in 2006 (excellent sim), iRacing in 2008, GTR in 2009, Ferrari Virtual Academy in 2010 and now it is great to know that there is a whole host of companies offering fantastic racing sims to the public.

Clearly the PC sims have overtaken GT which is understandable as the PS3 in particular is nowhere near the specs that can be achieved on a PC, however, PD continues to do an incredible job and GT6 is going to be amazing. The real major step will be GT on PS4, which will definitely reel in the PC sims even if PC sim racing looks to be the way to go in the future. Project CARS looks great so does Assetto Corsa, Raceroom Experience etc. Looking forward.

      Amen.

    5. bigcatfish

I’m sorry but I had to chime in on the comments about GT1 being the only real racing sim out there in ’98? And that it defined sims like iRacing?? Totally ridiculous.

I will say that it changed CONSOLE racing games as it was one of the first to be somewhat realistic with physics. It was a great game… absolutely loved it but lets not overate it’s significance. GT1 was the first to gain widespread popularity but was in no way the most realistic nor was it the first. From just a console perspective, Papyrus’ Nascar Racing and Psygnosis’ Formula 1 came well before and still have features of sim racing we have yet to see in Gran Turismo games today.

The two most influential games for sim racing (on ANY platform) were Sports Car GT and Papyrus’ NASCAR Racing series (mainly 2003 version). Those two sims set the stage – and their physics and basic platforms are still used by iRacing (who bought the rights to use Papyrus’ physics engine) and rFactor and GTR which basically run on the same concept that Sports Car GT ran on.

So GT1 was a great game but when you look that it’s only real competition on the PS1 was Need for Speed, Ridge Racer, and Cruisin’ USA… it’s not surprising it took off… but it wasn’t the first or the best.

      message by the catfish

P.S. if the name Papyrus does not ring a bell with you that’s sad

    6. Neilson248

@bigcatfish… I believe you have put the words “the only real racing out there” in my mouth. I never said that. In fact, I never even said that GT was, is or ever has been the best. I’m just saying that GT1 was the first “sim” to really catch the attention of the public. And of course, it is not really a sim, more of a mix of arcade and sim. Of course other sims existed before then for example Hard Drivin in 1989 and yes I understand that the Papyrus platform is widely regarded as the best. iRacing might be the best sim available to the public today although, maybe not for much longer.

The main point is that even PC sims only really became known after GT1 came out because, not many people really paid much attention to sims until that point. GT1’s arrival prompted people to look for more and it was only then that people really began finding out about papyrus for example. And also, if papyrus was so good, why did they sell it? Because they failed to capture the imagination of the public (despite a strong physics engine), a feat which PD has been so successful at.

So yes I stand by my argument that all other sims owe a big thank you to GT1.

    1. infamousphil

It’s definitely coming. Maybe not to GT6. But it’s coming. A driving sim where all modes of transportation, in an open world, will be realized.

PD can start by including weather and time of day at all its venues. Perhaps in GT8.

    2. Pit Crew

Why would we have to wait till GT8, to have day night transitions at Spa, which is actually the OPs inquiry. It could be done much sooner, like by GT6.

  12. Blood*Specter

Kaz is not going to give it all away. But unlike GT5 questions, he is smiling and having fun with GT6 questions.
This release is going to be very good if not epic. BOOK IT! Just hope he adds V8 Supercars and a couple more down under courses to support the V8 Supercars. Can we get some Adelaide, Sandown, Philip Island, Canberra DLC action?

    1. kekke2000

Yes! I think he has a big ace up his sleeve. There is one big puzzle piece missing so far in GT6. Wonder what it will be…

    2. ScotteDawg

      +1 B*S!
Adelaide has TWO layouts BTW – The Clipsal 500 circuit and the old Grand Prix circuit!
Not too fussed about Canberra, but Hidden Valley would be good. Oran Park and the Gold Coast Indy track too!

  13. hairystig

I got more than a little excited when I saw the bad piggies bit in the title of this article, I thought for a second that Kaz and I had something slightly odd in common as when I was a child and I got in trouble for being upto no good my parents tell me my excuse was always “the bad piggies made me do it” but alas no as it turns out I’m guessing bad piggies is just what they call angry birds in Japan. :(

    1. Gwenbors

It’s pretty B.A. and the key is that it basically allows players to build vehicles for the Bad Piggies to drive from the ground up… Can’t help but wonder if he’s alluding to an expansion of customization options on that one.

  14. Ferrari Enthusi

Lol Kaz was so selective of what he said. So he was not direct about anything. I will be tuned in for more news. Excited about GT6!

  15. Rated-M3

In regards to selecting cars for GT, why is there still no BMW E30? Doesn’t even have to be the M3… SpecE30 anyone?

    1. MLRSparco

OMG I was just reading the article and was about to say the exact same thing, that car definitely has historic significance,it better be in GT6.

    2. Johan

      Mmm… Group A touring cars…
The regulation that gave us more awsome show room cars than any other. And just imagine the “Battle of 80-90’s A” on Monza, Spa…Macau…
      Beautiful.

  16. Rynogtr23

Great interview, Kaz is awesome! I think the most realistic fantasy track he’s ever come up with was Midfield Raceway!

    1. Steph290

Correction, it’s “sookie sookie now”. I would’ve spelled it the same since I use the expression sometimes, but what you wrote means something completely different (according to google).

  17. jpbonadio

But the replays in GT5 are already tv-style. This is something that no other game can match. The replays in GT are more than perfect.

    1. SZRT Ice

GT1, GT2, and GT3 had a better replay system. As well as GRiD and the DiRT series. GT5’s Replay interface is a nuisance when it comes to switching from car to car. GT1 & GT2 had a feature the let you choose to keep the camera on the lead car and it auto-switched from car to car depending on who was in 1st place. Made for epic battle and tandem drift vids when replays were saved from 2Player mode. Would be even more epic in an online setting. Instead were stuck with GT5’s stat sheet cluttered interface every time a button is pressed.

    2. GTP_Versatile

I’d say GT4 had the better replay system, all you had to do was press either up or down on the directional pad to switch car. But GT5’s interface comes in handy when dealing with “lapped traffic.” Not all the best battles happen at the front.

    3. MadmuppGT

I hope they just bring back the wheel camera option, that used to be one of my favourite and most exciting camera angles, and with the new suspension data the camera focused on any wheel would look epic

  18. Amac500

So if I get friendly with Kaz can he put my sweet 1980 Ford Fiesta with racing part in the game? I’ll try my best guys, I think I’ll invite Kaz over for diner!

    1. drag lab 101

Anything like a sweet Pontiac Vibe?
How about a sweet 1976 Chevette?

      I’m dying Amac500.. Thx 4 the lol

    2. AcenSpades

If i can get friendly with KY, I’d throw him a block party with the crew bringing out their Dodge Magnums out in full force. That’ll convince him to put not just another station wagon, but one from the USA to take on the wagons of Europe and Asia, oh and can i have it in premium please? Thanks buuuuuuddy!

    3. drag lab 101

Yeah idk why I typed Vibe when I was thinking Aztec like the Pontiac in Breaking Bad… Sweet!
      Lol
Hey & smskeeter23 its drag lab…. Drug lab was decades ago :P

  19. W3HS

Great interview. I really enjoyed reading that.

I know this isn’t the place for it but, please, Mr Kaz, Apricot Hill & El Capitan, please and thank you.

  20. 05XR8

Kaz said it. Making cars fun. From drawing cars to playing with Hot Wheels to driving a car on the road. That’s what it’s all about.

  21. danardif1

Kaz is clearly a guy with an evolving vision of what ‘Gran Turismo’ should be, and I would suggest he and Polyphony are one of the very few game developers in history that have maximised the possibilities of the platform they are on.

His comments about balancing social integration and what the game is actually about is key for me. I am fed up of game developers attempting to ram ‘social features and integration’ down our throats. Many people play video games in the same way they might listen to an album or read a book… alone. Split-screen multiplayer games were good because they were designed as occasional titles that offered short-term gratification (the Mario Party titles being very influential there), and the advent of online multiplayer has introduced a new factor… playing alone at home against a lot of other people doing the same thing.

This is why I have no interest in Drive Club. GT5 has a very good setup for online communication actually… you can message other players ingame, you can gift items and cars, you can share your own car to be used by a friend, and you can personalise your driver and car (to some extent) to differentiate yourself on track. Of course that can be improved and expanded upon, but I don’t think there’s much else to be added. Saying that Kaz being on a different plane to us mortals might have some genius vision no-one could think of…

His comments on more frivolous titles like Bad Piggies is also nice to hear. It shows that he is still very much a gamer at heart, and in that sense he reminds me a lot of Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo. Both are guys who have given us visionary titles whilst understanding the emotions and mental processes of game players.

    1. biftizmo

Best sharing platform ever…and a ,network delivery system software engineering master piece…roll on the improved version..this game is gonna be so big…literally..

  22. tehPete

As much as we all love realistic tracks, it’d be really cool to see the teams let off the leash to create something completely different – a track on the moon or mars, for instance; or one driving round some giant mech factory or battlefield (metal gear / franchise crossovers?).

& given GT’s anniversary, I’d love to see the original GT1 tracks in GT6 in their original forms, for the nostalgia points :)

    1. chevyisthebest

its supposed to be a real driving simulator!!! You can’t drive on the moon or on mars!!!!!!!!

    2. swynder

You have a couple of games for that… Little Big Planet Karting, Hot Wheels…. so many moore, but please, not in GT…

    3. tehPete

It may be a simulator, but if Far Cry 3 / Blood Dragon has shown anything it’s that every once and a while it can be worth just doing stuff for the fun of it. There’s no escaping the fact you’re playing a videogame no matter how good a simulator it is, so why not have fun with it for once? Just one track, just to give the teams some creative fresh air in the development cycle,to experiment with different ideas; I’d be infinitely more likely to buy a DLC track of this type than any other.

    4. researchALLwars

the Mars track doesn’t sound bad at all. Maybe construct it around the Pyramids…. ; )

    5. biftizmo

whoo..may be we can call it….Kartspace!!! and even sell it as DLC……you dudes….wheir where you in the early days of the PD think tank….lol

    6. ScotteDawg

-1000000000000000 tehPete! The emphasis in the title of ‘Real Driving Simulator’ would be placed on the word REAL in this case!!!
It would be my opinion that you have been taking some serious drugs to come up with this idea! SAY NO TO DRUGS!!!

@biftizmo – HAPPY BIRTHDAY old man!

    7. tehPete

The Kartspace was on a small scale; you’re saying you wouldn’t be interested in a Mars track, or landscape for the track generator? I’ll give that the other suggestions were a bit daft though. Only drugs I’m on are legal ones – pain killers; I was the victim of a road rage attack on thursday, some tourist chased me down, battered my face through the open window, then opened the door and carried on at my side – while I still had my belt on. I’d been looking to overtake a car doing 15-20, went to pull out and had to nip back in to avoid him oncoming – close but no contact, at most you’d expect a finger and some angry words maybe… :/

I dislike tourist season. Perhaps this is why driving on Mars is appealing atm.

    8. biftizmo

tehpete…dam rotten luck there mate…horrible people…there not humans…..stick to GT mate..sims are safer…i”m looking forward to racing in 10’s of square kilometers in that awesome new photo mode landscape…coming in GT6 i may be an oldie but in know whats the best racing sim ever…maybe we will race soon ..just ad me up…there are better people in the world mate…

    9. ScotteDawg

Sorry to hear about that and, in that case, sorry about the drugs remark. There should be harsher penalties for road rage! It seems that nothing stops these idiots!!

However, the Gran Turismo series is a driving/racing sim that has been based on real world physics. I can’t see Polyphony Digital doing physics based on zero gravity…

But a “wasteland” would be good, as would an old factory!

    10. tehPete

ty for the kind words gents, greatly appreciated – & Penblwydd Happus biftizmo :) I’m still alive, nothing broken (doesn’t feel like it, heh), and the guy was arrested within an hour so it’s up to the CPS now.

I can’t wait for GT6 otherwise; I’ve always thought the track generator held much promise, just lacked any real definition – if they live up to the promise, the improvements there alone make the next GT a must buy for me :D Zero gravity is one thing and a bit of a stretch (Gravity-Track? Nurburgring In Space?), but a track on Mars could be do-able :) Equally so, a track around Kaz’s ultra top-secret undersea base… ;)

  23. 2012GT325

Rally Racing, one of my favs on previous GT games, sucked in GT5. They could do away with NASCAR and instead give us proper dirt racing and road racing. Also, speaking of cool, sexy cars, why aren’t RUF and Bugatti models not premium in GT5? Aren’t they cool or sexy?

    1. Antonisbob

No thanks, I love NASCAR. Circle track dirt racing would be cool.

No, screw the Bugatti and RUF’s. Overrated.

    2. smskeeter23

I think if you take away NASCAR after adding it you’ll have a riot on your hands. Not dissimilar to if drifting was removed. It’s all in there now, better leave it since they both have big followings and fans.

By all means please add better dirt racing ;-)

  24. Blood*Specter

Will there be a release of GT Supercars similar to what was done with NASCAR to support the Bathurst course?
Hope so. I also would like to see some of the GT Supercar tracks along with some Canadian tracks.

    1. ScotteDawg

Sorry, I have to correct you on this.

It is NOT GT Supercars, it is V8 Supercars!

      But yes, please add them!!!

  25. CapnFlappyJaw

Something I REALLY want in GT, is to be able to make my own paint jobs, like in Forza. That’s the one thing I like better in Forza than GT. I hope it’ll happen, even if I have to wait until 7, or the PS4 version.

    1. chevyisthebest

I think TDU2 (test drive unlimited 2) had better paint jobs and all that cause u could really just do anything u wanted

  26. Rionmoon

Kaz should become an Amercan citizen then run for political office. I haven’t I heard so much talking around the questions and not really saying anything that we didn’t already know since last year’s elections.

Thanks for the interview GT Planet but it really told us nothing new.

  27. smskeeter23

Seems to be a growing trend here lately…

GT6 doesn’t even have a confirmed release date yet. Can we at least wait until launch +6hrs before we start talking about GT7? Geezus.

    1. Rionmoon

People are interested in GT 7 because most of us here understand that GT 6 isn’t going g to be a whole lot more than GT 5+ . Anybody expecting a whole lotta new and better better lower their expectations considerably.

People also realize that GT 7 most likely will be released on PS4 (I SAY most likely because who can figure out the decision making process with Kaz and PD?) and the leering public and long time players would like have some insight into what the REAL NEW Gran Turismo might offer. Will outfit it be m no more disappointment and a rehash of the same problems that exist in GT5/6 or will it be the simulator we KNOW it has the potential to be?

    2. rex1825

…well, the thing is… at least what I see is that guys from PD are with their hands deep in GT, but time is what is killing them.
GT game as is right now… I can imagine how much time is needed to make one car so it is “perfect” with all it’s adds, tunning parts etc. …and the game, GT5 now has around 1100 cars with DLC ones…

Importing cars from previous GT’s was something to expect with GT6 also…

Regarding custom livery… In my opinion, PS3 had hard time keeping up 60/50fps in GT5… new engine as promised will keep that fps, but that doesn’t mean that someone can get into game custom pics so to say… since that would debalance a bit engine.

I personally hope that we will see all customization from pure performance to visual. And also would like to see a lot of new things in mp section of game. + as mentioned many times, would like to see some old cars that were in previous games.

…one thing more, since PD always got 2 games per generation of consoles, it is highly true that PS4 will see GT7 instead of reincarnation of GT6 (even though GT3 was improved GT2, as was GT5 improved GT4). And also, PD is making more and more cars “premium”… this might also be a sign that “new generation GT” could have only one cars – premium.

I am looking forward to see what PD has prepared for us with this 6th game. And hope that they will make DLC with cars that gamers would like to see in game :)

      Cheers…

    3. MeanElf

Most of us Rionmoon? You are speaking for yourself and a few friends more likely, as only a few seem to think that GT6 will be no more than an upgrade to GT5. The true majority seem content to let the game come, and to see what we get when it’s in our hands.

Speculation is fine, but call it that, please.

    4. RandomCarGuy17

I know, people are speaking like GT6 is already out and is a poor game. For me; it seems to be that it’ll be a great sequel.

I mean, there’s probably going to be a lot more events than in GT5, more customization options, more consistant dlc, better physics engine, 450+ premium cars, improved standards, and possibly better car sounds.

    5. biftizmo

      smskeeter23 :agread””
      Rionmoon…GT5+?..wow!!!!..GT5 ? but even better? now that’s something…

  28. McZachenF1138

I love the blatantly avoided answer to the second to last question! :P

I really think that, while this game will be much better than GT5, fans are still going to be disappointed.
I have a big feeling GT6 is just to tie fans over for a few years and give them a few wanted features until GT7 comes out, which will be the game we have been waiting for all along.

    1. biftizmo

just how long is that then?…GT1 was the came we were all waiting for all along. we’ve moved on since then.

  29. gtpanoz

Now will everybody call Kaz a Bad Piggie when they want complain about something on GT? Can’t blame him loving Bad Piggies, it’s fun!

  30. This Is It

I hope there will be an offroad events in GT6. XD like using hummer H1s H2s and H3, porsche cayenne, land rover cars, etc. haha!

  31. Whodoyouthink

Personally I really kinda hate Kaz’s interview answers. It’s like pulling teeth or something with him. Very vague and never straightforward.

    1. infamousphil

Simple, Stephanos… it’s not going to be in the game. We all ready know these things and or it’s a nonissue.

  32. GTHEAD87

If you pick cars with historical significance then why aren’t these car in any previous games?

    Opel ascona 400
    Opel manta
    Ford escort mk1/mk2/mk3
    Ford sierra rs cosworth/sapphire 4×4
    Vauxhall cavalier mk1/mk2/mk3
    Vauxhall chevette hsr
    Lancia 037
    Fiat/abarth 131
A lot of bmw, audi etc.

The quattro just made it in and that changed rallying before Peugeot or lancia.

    1. Spade13

I’m keeping fingers crossed that Polyphony surprisingly includes the E30 M3, and upgrades the M3 CSL to premium.

    2. MeanElf

Be fair, that is a factor for the cars that have been chosen. To have every historically important car in the game…well, that list would be way larger than they could deliver.

I also think PD aren’t really that up on rally cars, a few of which I recognise from your list.

It’s their game and I’m always quite happy to see what they come up with each time.

    3. huhobanut

CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG …. KITT … THE GENERAL LEE … AND THE A TEAM’S VAN …. PLEASE !!

    4. ScotteDawg

We have only seen maybe 15 of the 200 cars that are being added in GT6!

The rest of the vehicular content will either be revealed at Gamescon, in the lead up to the release of GT6 or it will be a FREAKING SURPRISE!!!

The only people who NEED to know everything about a game before it’s release are the developer and the publisher! Sure, you can throw a tanty if it will make you feel better or you can refuse to buy the game, but it won’t change the fact that we are ALL insignificant until the game is made available for the public!!

      OPTIMISM = GOOD
      PESSIMISM = BAD
      WISHLISTS = GOOD
      DEMANDS = BAD

    5. GTHEAD87

My point is that an opel ascona 400 is a wrc legend, over 30 different versions of the mazda mx5?! Seriously, how do most of the mx5’s have historical significance? Because they have different wheels? They all have the same power and weight so why have them all? Could have 30 real legendary cars instead of the same damn car.

  33. jpbonadio

“As I mentioned earlier, in addition to working on the physics engine, rendering engine, AI, and sound simulation, we are really working to a higher target for these things, and one of these days we will be able to show everyone the outcome of what we are able to achieve.”

He must be talking about GT7 on the PS4.

Man, I’m just imagining what PD could do in an impressive hardware like the PS4. I think the diference between GT and real life will be very close.

    1. TomBrady

Don’t need that much power to make a better simulation. It’s easily possible on PS3, they just can’t go that far yet. A lot of the people who play GT still use controllers, and can’t handle a full simulation so they’re gradually making more realistic.

    2. Allek

BTW, as Logitech has turned consoles down in favor of PC, and since our wheels won’t work with the PS4, it’s gonna be quite a restricted portfolio of wheels to choose from in a near future.

  34. smskeeter23

I love a good fictional track every now and again but in GT I really come for the real life tracks. I appreciate how much time it takes to make them though and understand that the fictional tracks are likely much easier, cheaper, and faster to make. I say keep them coming since it boosts variety but please continue moddeling real ones for us as well ;)

What about taking some of the “best” user created tracks and turning those into full version “fanatasy tracks”? Just a thought…

I know if one of my tracks was ever selected I’d be willing to pay for it in DLC just to see it as a full in game track

    1. ScotteDawg

With Real World tracks, PD needs to obtain the licence to use it too!

It might nit be a matter of cost, just availability…

  35. smskeeter23

I wonder if Kaz realizes what kind of a rock star he has become in many circles… He probably just single handedly netted Rovio Mobile several thousand downloads with his comments lol!

  36. hobanator24

Great interview! I don’t know if this has been asked, but what is his favorite GT game so far? If he says GT2, a good follow up question would be to ask him if there is anything from that game specifically that will be making a comeback.

  37. TokoTurismo

I really liked this interview a lot. It was both interesting and funny. xD Kazunori is cool. Also, Kazunori does visit GTPlanet. O,O Oh, and Kaz really is trying to achive the A.I. as well the sounds (I knew he wasn’t joking).

I also hope he brings back more of the original courses, because I never knew Kaz loved making imaginary tracks. That was one of my most favorite things to do in Modnation Racers for me. :D

    1. Wiki

KY: “Ahhhh! Yes, it’s really by accident. I was really surprised when I saw your article.” I know, he does visit GTPlanet!

    2. MeanElf

Well, it might have been sent to him as a document by the PD people that keep a look out for feedback, but he did recognise the source.

Kazunori san made at least some of the Seasonal Event track creations too, especially those for the TTs early on. I like that his own idea of a fantasy track had more than a few elements of reality about them.

    1. sangdude82

Yeah, I was gonna mention that as well. I hope that he can deliver those newest and sexy cars such as Koenigsegg Agera R & Pagani Zonda Cinque.

    2. 2012GT325

I guess the “newst/coolest” doesn’t involve the fastest car in the world, the Veyron. That car gets in the game but is a standard, pixelated model. Ouch.

    1. ScotteDawg

      Replay editor +1
Replay extended by 10 second at the end!
Return to GT4’s easier way of scrolling through opponent cars during replay! (using D-pad)

    2. Quakebass

It would seriously help with replay exporting.

In GT5, there’s WAY too much open-endedness – all sorts of different angles to choose from, all of which can be placed on each car. You would have to decide on 1 car and one angle for the entirety of the race to export on GT5. What should be done some sort of clip editor, where you can decide on what part of the replay will be recorded, and then you decide when in these clips the camera changes position and/or car it’s following. PD may need to add 2-3 different shot possibilities (excluding angles attached to the car) at each point as well if this were to happen… It’d be cool if you could design your own angles/camera movements (like 3-D keyframing if anyone’s done animation here), but that’s REALLY wishful thinking.

    3. infamousphil

GT2 had a focal point selector. Single car or target car plus closest competitor. That was the coolest. We now need slow motion, a flight cam, spectator view.

    1. Halcyon925

Maybe Kaz might consider making GTPlanet apart of Gran Turismo 6 as some of the social media. That’d be pretty cool.

  38. NCRthree

one of these days we will be able to show everyone the outcome of what we are able to achieve.

    One of these days?

  39. GT5 Level 41

Welp, we got some straighter answers that time. Keep pushing Jordon. I hope you have another installment soon.

  40. MadmuppGT

The next person to get an interview with Kaz please ask him about a livery editor… although I guess its new info that he plays bad piggies and angry birds…

    1. daus26

It’s already been asked. I wouldn’t expect a new answer. He’ll only answer what he feels is the appropriate time to do so, obviously.

    2. SkierPS3

Don’t hold your breath, though there still is much we don’t know about GT6, I really don’t see Kaz putting in a livery editor. It doesn’t really fit with the theme of Gran Turismo as a whole, and I kind of can’t blame him if he doesn’t put one in, or puts a simplistic and restricted version in.

    3. ScotteDawg

Personally, I don’t think it will be in GT6 but may be in GT7!

What you have to consider is the power of the PS3 and then all that is being put into GT6!

However, if one goes in at all, why would he tell us? It’s like knowing what’s in your Christmas present before you open it!! Why spoil the surprise?

  41. solracarreug

What feature of GT6 are you personally most excited to see implemented?
he didn’t even answer that one WTH? xD

    1. ScotteDawg

WTF??? Can’t you read? He said that he is most excited about the cars! Mind you, he did say he had a strange answer…

    1. Ferrari458Italia

I’m going to be saaaad if Pikes Peak isn’t on GT6. It’s probably my favorite classic GT track

    2. sangdude82

Who knows. Since Sébastien Loeb is participating on this year’s Pikes Peak, Kaz might pay his attention to the event and say ‘hmm, may be I should add that track on GT6’.
