DIRT 5 Will Be Free on PlayStation Plus in January

Rally racing title DIRT 5 will be among the free games available to PlayStation Plus subscribers in January 2022.

Starting on January 4 and running through to February 1, anyone with an active PlayStation Plus subscription can add DIRT 5 to their game library for free. So long as it has been added to your library, you’ll be able to download and play it at any time without additional cost if you have a live PlayStation Plus account, even if it lapses and you later renew it.

The title is available as both PS4 and PS5 versions, alongside PS4 RPG Persona 5 Strikers, and co-op first-person shooter Deep Rock Galactic (PS4/PS5), which is making its PlayStation debut as a free game.

Racing games rarely appear in the PS Plus free game deals, with only Need for Speed Payback, Onrush, Destruction AllStars, Wreckfest, and DIRT 5’s stablemate/predecessor DIRT Rally 2.0 available in the last three years. That makes this a pretty welcome appearance, if a little surprising.

DIRT 5 is, relatively speaking, a recent release, launching alongside the PS5 in November 2020. However DR2 also appeared as a PS Plus free game 14 months after its own February 2019 launch, in April 2020.

If you’re not familiar with the game, it’s a fast-paced, action packed ode to off-road driving of all flavors, ranging from modern WRC machinery to famous rally cars of the past, and Dakar weapons to exposed spaceframe buggies designed to crawl up frighteningly vertical slopes.

Though it doesn’t necessarily have the depth of simulation of its more serious siblings in the DIRT Rally series, DIRT 5 is nonetheless a good-looking title — especially on next-gen consoles where 4K and 120fps modes are available — and the stunt arena creation “Playgrounds” mode is an absolute time-sink.

You’ll have five weeks to claim your copy of DIRT 5 for free, and it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed with that deal!
