GTPlanet’s GT6 Track of the Week 25: Oakhill Road

We’re a little late this week, but have no fear: the Track of the Week is here! Last week’s Complex String turned out to be a big hit, and the community has followed it up with a decidedly different track: Oakhill Road.

Oakhill-Road-logoGTPlanet member eran0004 is the designer behind this week’s featured creation. If that’s a name you recognize, it might be due to his two previous contributions: Melder’s Brook and Montemaggiore. Eran has shifted gears with Oakhill Road, bringing with it more jumps than a House of Pain song.

Inspired by an Easter holiday drive, Oakhill Road is a narrow, high-speed run through Andalusia. Eran recommends cars in the 400-450 PP range, and it’s easy to see why in my sighting run. The Evo X Rally Car will launch itself right off some of the track’s sizeable jumps, so a brush of the brakes is needed at a few separate moments. For a more relaxed view of the track, you should check out Eran’s own video, featuring a road-going Lancia Delta and calm piano music.

My favourite portion of the track has to be the quick right-hander just before the 6km mark on the map (or around 4:38 in the video up top). There’s a small bump just before turn-in that, in the case of the Mitsubishi, sets it up favourably for the turn itself. You really feel the Evo leaning on the outside tire here, and the speed carried is impressive.

Gran Turismo 6
The Evo is a very stable car. For 95% of the lap.

A close second would be the first left turn of the lap. The tarmac is climbing up here, where another bump is lying in wait mid-corner, eager to throw you off your line. Turning in late really helps with this one if you want to avoid a date with the barrier!

Also worth noting is the final turn of the course. After a high-speed run, the long, bumpy braking zone will punish those that aren’t paying attention.

Cleverly, the track was created using the original 1.00 version of the Track Path Editor, not the updated, current version. It’s this choice that makes all of the bumps at Oakhill possible.

Congratulations to Eran – I haven’t tried Oakhill Road yet, but I strongly recommend that people try all his tracks including Maiwald which is a realistic classic track in the style of the Nordschleife – in fact it is so good it must be a shoe in for a future track of the week. It was the winning entry in a track making competition held for my new Wednesday Cobras and Friday Rockets series. Also chack out Eran’s interpretation of the 1955 Aintree British GP course set on a desert template – a brilliant peice of track making and great for racing.
