Midfield Raceway Coming to Gran Turismo 6 in Free Update

Gran Turismo 6

A classic Gran Turismo original circuit – Midfield Raceway – will be returning to the series in the next free GT6 update! First introduced more than 15 years ago in Gran Turismo 2, Midfield has not been seen since the release of Gran Turismo 4 back in 2004 (aside from an appearance in Gran Turismo PSP), and has never been seen on the PlayStation 3.

Gran Turismo 6

It’s back in a big way, too, with full time-of-day and weather changes. It’s also been completely overhauled with a major graphical update for GT6.

Gran Turismo 6

Midfield Raceway has always been one of the series’ most popular fantasy tracks, and remains one of the most-wanted circuits in the game. GTPlanet has voted the circuit as its second-most wanted track in our Gran Turismo Track Suggestions forum, sitting behind only the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Course (another classic from GT2).

Here’s a video of the track from its most recent appearance in Gran Turismo 4:

The announcement on Polyphony’s PitStop Blog also confirms the Mazda LM55 Vision GT and Chaparral 2X Vision GT cars will both be paintable in GT6 update 1.16, which will be released soon. Check out the gallery below for more screenshots:

Sweet! In future updates post-1.16 they should add:
    El Capitan
    Costa di Amalfi
    SSR11
    Seattle
    Citti di Aria
    New York
    Hong Kong
    George V and Opera Paris
    Grand Canyon
Valencia (from Tourist Trophy and GT PSP)
    Infineon Raceway
    Seoul Circuit

Happy about B-spec, Mid field not so excited. Prefer a real world circuit, any circuit as long as it’s real world.

  3. Buda_Death

still have a lot ot features to improve on GT6, one of things that i think they can be change are the videos of VGT it requires space on the HD and before i see the video once i dont want it anymore on the disc, they maybe have to put the option to delete this videos if you want it also can be aplicable for the cars, for me some VGT like the Infinity dont are my type of car, and it takes space in my hard drive and dont want it..

  4. 0r3n

I’m still holding out for rainbow road…. it will make the overtaking seasonals so much more fun…. racing a rabbit kart with Ayrton Senna’s kart to that last corner and watching it miss the breaking point and go off into space … .. but for now…. this will do as far as nostalgic reboots are concerned …

  5. Maddens Raiders

What the hell? I go away for a few days and this happens?!! I never doubted PD for a moment but damn all of this news at once is next to ridiculous lol!!! I love this “game”! Now just add the ability to turn and keep headlights on for real races and turn on the jumbotron at Le Mans and of course the track editor and this title will be well on it’s way to a console masterpiece, which it isn’t far from now so do it PD – I trust you.

  6. Cosmos29

Delighted to hear this as a long time fan of the series since GT1. May have to take back my prior comments about PD not listening to the community. There are many legacy track that the community would like to see make a return in GT6 (or 7). For me personally would love to see the full El Capitan (pavement and dirt portions) make a return.

  7. cullenster

The final section of Midfield is awesome, through the tunnel and over the blind crest apex. Now how about Umbria? Oh god, the thought of racing through those tight little streets!!!

  8. teth75

i’ve only just heard!!!! YES!!!! FINALLY…. Will fire ps3 back up and update gt6 just for this!!!! Better late than never lol PD.

  9. BrunoI_SRE

Really good news, carry on PD!
    El Capitan next?
    Please!!!!!!
It was such a nice track, and deserves to come back like Midfield and Apricot.

  10. CorvetteConquer

About time we get some interesting and optimistic news! GT7 needs a whole lotta love (Hey, Led Zeppelin!), a major overhauling of the A-spec mode and frankly, a free mode. It’s got to do something utterly and completely new.

But back to GT6. Now I have a reason to boot it back up before Project Cars.

  11. MrJim

Oh man, I can barely contain myself. It’ll be like a dream come true to race Midfield in the rain. What a blast! I remember daydreaming about driving Midfield in the rain while driving Eiger Nordwand in the rain in GT5P. Did GT5P have rain? Maybe it was GT5. Anyways, I’m absolutely pumped.

On another related note, what does everyone think they were hinting at with this statement (in the Pit Stop post):
“You can play PlayStation titles on PlayStation 3; maybe if you drive Mid-Field on Gran Turismo 2, you might discover something unexpected!”
Are they saying the PS3 will somehow recognize that you’re driving or have driven on that track in GT2 and change something?
Or when the update comes, could it check for save data or replay data in the virtual PS1 memory card slots and do something special in GT6?
What else could they mean by “you might discover something unexpected”?
Would it be unexpected for them to return turns 1 and 2 to their original layout? (they were sharpened in GT4)
I’ll be trying it tonight in GT2. It’s been so long since I’ve played GT2 though that I probably wouldn’t notice if anything is different. Maybe I’ll try it with GT3 and GT4 as well just for old time’s sake. If anybody does find out what they mean, I’d like to know; I love easter eggs. Reminds me of playing Metal Gear Solid where Psycho Mantis looks through your memory card and mentions some of the games you’ve played. It’d be pretty cool if they did something like that in GT6.

    1. mr_pepps

I think it just means if you drive Midfield in GT2 you’ll find a load of new scenery and detail in the latest incarnation.

  12. Tvensky

Sadly I sold my ps3 and got ps4, still waiting for gt7… I start to think they doing it wrong.. They have to focus on ps4 ASAP.. Hope those tracks will be improved.. They look very old.. And every little detail is indestructible.. With flat textures.. How many times they will remake it over and over again… It takes tons of time for them..

    1. HarVee

I’d rather they focus their efforts on completing GT6 before moving onto GT7 and PS4. They still have a lot of features that are not delivered but were advertised pre-launch, and many existing features that could be improved.

  13. moxlox

Obviously we see a lot of criticism for PD and GT on these pages, but I have to say surely GT6 is one of the best supported games of all time; certainly in terms of free updates. The only PS game I think is comparable for this was Burnout.

Anyway…..as for this track, superb news and I cannot wait.

  14. VBR

I have fond memories of doing time trials with a friend on Midfield Raceway in GT3. We’d exchange replay files & use the data logger to hone our times, good stuff!

    1. nonficshaun

Midfield was my GT3 time track also. It taught me braking, long corner accel control, and tight s-curve nav. This will be such a welcome addition for the nostalgic crew.

  15. Peter Weszka

Very great move , to rebuild a old legendary GT track back into Gran Turismo 6

iam very happy about that !

what can be cool to is maybe : Seattle an Redrock Valley Speedway

    and real world tracks :

Eurospeedway Lausitzring , Macau , Zandvoort Netherlands and Gatebilt Rudskogen ;)

    1. nonficshaun

Yes, Seattle. I wish the Rome circuit from GT3 was in place of the current Rome too. It was just more interesting and had better change up.

    1. Tuppence870

Not exactly. The Escudo is one of the Standard cars with a high-quality Premium-like exterior but an all-black interior

  16. Mr C5 Z06 Vette

I’m actually crying tears of joy right now. MIDFIELD IS BACK!!!!!!! It’s only the 2nd best original track ever just behind Trial Mountain (a track that I feel an emotional connection to because of a series of events in gt3 with my beautiful C5-R) Today just got 1million times better.

  17. jezboosted

    B:Spec, Midfield and paintable wings.

    Pretty happy with this update.

Obviously we want more, but thank you nonetheless.

  18. ThrasherDBS

You know back in the days of GT3 and GT4, I kinda found this to be a boring track. But since I haven’t seen it since GT4, I’m certainly welcoming it back. I look forward to seeing the PS3 rendered Midfield Raceway.

Here’s to hoping more tracks come back. (SSR11 please?)

  19. Mellow70

Oh snap! GT6 and GTPlanet News has been feeling Dead for a while and then, KABOOM!!! “Midfield Raceway is coming soon with pics!

So Excited my childhood race track is coming back! Thanks PD!

  20. Gallade4751

guys i’m pretty sure by now that gt6 is gt7:Prologue. There is no way that they spent this much time NOT reworking the content that has been absent.this is most likely a demo of what is to come in gt7.

    1. Pseudopod

They are probably modelling things with enough details and definition to use them in GT7, but scaling them down and using them in GT6 as well doesn’t make GT6 GT7P.

  21. JASON_ROCKS1998

This is just great news. midfield is my favourite track ever in a game and it’s back! Can’t wait to take a Pagani Zonda S round here like the good ol’ days!

  22. GT FM Jay1997

Looks like PD has finally got its arse in gear giving us the course maker and mid field. Now for the rest of the tracks.

  23. warpkez

Seeing as it is possible that GT6 has loss traction with gamers, especially with newer games taking things a step further, I just hope my cynicism is wrong.

    Slight correction: soon*

    * May not imply now, may not imply then, may not actually imply any real time frame.

  24. Kazuya720

YESSS!!!! Thank you PD for bringing back, my beloved all-time favourite track!

I miss that track since I stoped playing GT4.

I wonder if we will see also Seattle, El Capitan and Grindelwald ;)

  25. renypayne21

We are probably getting the update tomorrow because it will be Tuesday which is when we received most if not all of the GT6 updates.

    1. Chameleon9000

So tomorrow… because its a Tuesday… when there are 52 other Tuesdays every year…

If your right, congratulations, you deserve the fluke guess award.

  26. sangdude82

May be this is what Kaz & PD should do for GT7. Get the most voted (by GTPlanet users) classic/old tracks and upgrade to ps4 graphics and put them into the GT7.

  27. Azzurro007

why state “free gt6 update”? .. havent they all been free since the beginning of time that GT games started featuring updates ota?

    1. HarVee

Oh you very much know that in 3 months from now when all the hype has died people will go back to complaining about everything. That’s pretty much a guarantee.

Either way my GT appetite is satisfied for the time being.

  28. MXHyland

“…Midfield has not been seen since the release of Gran Turismo 4 back in 2004 (aside from an appearance in Gran Turismo PSP)…”, and Tourist Trophy.

    ;)

  29. HarVee

Best news I’ve heard all month. Literally.

Is it just me or does that Escudo look premium in that screenshot? Maybe its just the lighting deceiving me.

    1. Tuppence870

Not exactly. The Escudo is one of the Standard cars with a high-quality Premium-like exterior but an all-black interior

    2. HarVee

Yeah I had figured as much. I never really had hopes for that car becoming premium. Though it would be a nice treat for GT7.

  30. Steph290

You know its been a year since I touched GT6 due to my original PS3 dying twice. This just might cause me to go and revive it a third time. Always loved Midfield raceway and glad to see it back!

    1. ZoidFile

Some day I will invent a machine that punches people in the face over the internet. And then I will be RICH… and very bruised.

    2. Steph290

We’ve got so many pot holes in NYC, we might as well be driving on cobblestone. No joke, if they bring it back to GT, they need to envision a new layout.

  31. ChauMing803

So anyone know when the update 1.16 comes?Do we have to wait until March, along with the Alpine VGT(maybe also the rumored track besides Midfield)?

  32. WhiterunGuard

This is awesome! Now all I need track wise is Costa di Amalfi (and the rest of the city courses but Costa would be my first choice.)

    1. breyzipp

I assume any “new” track they add to GT6 now will be included in GT7 as well. I don’t think they will put all these expensive dev resources into a new track if it would only be for GT6, that would be silly. Just my 2 cents.

  33. dylanlikes88

    HAAAAAAAALLEELUUUUJJAAAHH!!!!! HAAAAAAAAALLEELUUUJJAAAHH!!!!! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! HAAALLEELUUJAAAHH!!!!!

  34. oli440

Faith has been restored for PD! Who cares about competition when we’re getting stuff like this handed to us on a plate (FREE OF CHARGE!). Go Gran Turismo!

    1. TomBrady

I’d rather pay then only get 1 car or track at a time.

I wish GT6 had a season pass like Driveclub. Tracks through free updates every month, 5 cars, and a bunch of tour events to use the cars in every month

    2. jackbogus

Exactly, free can’t be argued with.

@TomBrady pay for new cars!? Is this because your a terrible driver and can’t make money.

    3. Johnnypenso

Haha Jackbogus, as if you need to have any skill as a driver whatsoever to accumulate money in this game…nice joke…lol.

  35. FS7

That’s good news! Midfield has always been a favorite of mine.
Is PD going to include proper racing too or are we still limited to time trial only?

  36. grashopper

Very excited to see this one again!
Now all I need is Seattle, Costa di Amalfi, and Citta di Aria.

    And others…

    Woo Midfield!

    1. another_jakhole

Nice. You hit thee three I want most back in GT. Damn there are so many other great tracks too. Awww maaannn.

    2. SZRT Ice

Citta di Aria, Hong Kong, Cathedral, & Costa di Amalfi would be a DREAM!!! Throw in the old rally courses and an updated (bigger) NY track and I’d play GT6 exclusively until GT7 arrives!!!

  37. 440 CHARGER

Fabulous! This was my favorite original GT track. Loved the elevation change through the tunnels at the start of the long font stretch. Cant wait to get back on this classic track!

  38. another_jakhole

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!H!H!H!H!HH!!!!!H!H!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!H!

    :DDDDDDDDDDDDD:DDDDDDDD:DD:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

    This is so awesome! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

haha I’m really happy about this. I just can’t stop smiling.

    1. dylanlikes88

I threw my hands in the air and screamed YES! in the middle of lunch at school. Everyone was starring at me…lol
