Forza Horizon 4 Guide: Achievement List, Car List, Track List, and More

Forza Horizon 4 is the fourth title in the Forza Motorsport-spinoff Horizon series. Developed by UK studio, Playground Games, the Horizon games take inspiration from the Motorsport series but place the player into a large open-world map, driving from race to race and engaging in other challenges.

As an Xbox Studios title, FH4 is exclusive to the Xbox console family — available on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles — and PC.

Introduction

Playground Games unveiled Forza Horizon 4 at E3 in June 2018. As expected, the announcement revealed that the title would assume the format that previous Horizon games had taken: an open-world celebration of driving, largely inspired by Forza Motorsport but without some of that series’ seriousness.

While the other Horizon titles had taken players to some interesting and exotic locations – Colorado, The Riviera, and Australia – FH4 almost literally returned home, to Playground Games’ native United Kingdom.

Though not a faithful recreation of the UK, the FH4 map replicates some areas of northern England, Scotland, and the Cotswolds – the latter of which is where PG is located. The landscape does include some landmarks of these regions, including sightseeing locations like Bamburgh Castle and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, and parts of Edinburgh city.

Release Date

The original launch of Forza Horizon 4 came on October 2, 2018, on both Xbox and PC. Ultimate Edition players on both platforms had early access starting on September 28, 2018.

Although FH4 itself dates back to 2018, it will effectively relaunch in 2020 on the new Xbox Series consoles. A dedicated Xbox Series S/X version, developed by Panic Button with Playground Games, arrived with the new console’s global launch on November 10, 2020.

Features

Open World

Forza Horizon 4 is an open-world racer which, like its predecessors, is set on a large map drawing inspiration from the real world. This means players aren’t limited to a race track, but can drive almost anywhere.

Although there are a handful of indestructible barriers and impassable geography, players can drive from almost any point on the map to almost any other in any route they choose – staying on the roads, or blitzing across the terrain. Both have their own rewards.

Story Mode

The core of the Horizon game series is that the player is a participant in the Horizon Festival. This is an unlikely celebration of motoring that sees thousands of car enthusiasts flock to the festival and take part in a wide range of racing events.

You’ll race on circuits, point to point events, road course, rally courses, and drag strips, improving your “influence” rank and financial situation, to gain access to more cars and grander events. Eventually these culminate in exclusive races only for the drivers with the most influence.

In addition there’s a number of side quests which may see you take on the role of a movie stunt driver, fill in for The Stig, or become Master Chief for a race.

A further game mode added in December 2020, called “Super7”, also added the ability to create your own courses and challenges with obstacles.

Season Changes

FH4 has week-long seasons, with the weather shifting a little for all players each Thursday. These progress sequentially, from summer to autumn, then winter and spring. The seasons also change depending on your progress through the early part of the story, before synchronizing with the rest of the community.

That leads to some dramatic changes, with wet roads one week, ice the next, and then sunshine the next. In winter the usually impassable lakes become frozen over, adding to the proportion of the map you can drive on.

Vehicle Customization

There is an enormous array of ways to customize your car in FH4, though how much you can do does depend on the vehicle in question.

You can start with a livery, which could be anything from a new paint job to a fully stickered-up race car. There’s no upload capability, but players can create their own stickers from individual shapes grouped together and saved as single items.

In addition there’s visual upgrades too, including bodykits, aerodynamic devices, and even light bars. To go with that, you can also tune all areas of your car, from suspension and brakes to power components, with engine swaps also available on some vehicles.

DLC & Expansions

Across the game’s life thus far, Playground Games has added new vehicles and content at a fairly steady rate. After each set of four seasons, at each new Summer season, the studio adds in a handful of new vehicles free to all players.

In addition there’s been cars available only for additional payment. This included a selection of around 40 cars in the Car Pass, some of which have been part of subsequent car packs.

FH4 has also seen two major expansions. The first of these, Fortune Island, arrived in December 2018 and added a new area of the map with new quests. A second, LEGO Speed Champions, came along in June 2019, with a new region and new cars made entirely from the famous Danish building blocks.

Online Multiplayer

There’s a few different angles to the online multiplayer in FH4, rather than straightforward racing – though this is also a part of the picture. Largely it centers on team and co-op events.

This includes the Forzathon feature, which sees you and up to 11 other players get together and trying to rack up stunt points – drifting, speed traps, etc – to pass a goal target. There’s also team racing which sees you paired with five other drivers to beat the other team’s scores.

Adventure events are classic team sports, with flag capture and king modes. You can also try to beat a friend’s race time in a Rivals event, and a virtual version of you – a Drivatar – can race for you in absentia.

Xbox Series X Upgrades

If you’re looking to play FH4 on your Xbox Series X, you’ll also benefit from some console-specific upgrades – rather than merely playing a legacy version via backwards compatibility.

Developer Panic Button has worked with Playground Games to allow FH4 to use the Series X capabilities. That includes the SSD, which cuts loading times down to around 20% of those on the Xbox One. The Xbox Series S will also benefit from this.

You’ll also be able to play FH4 in 4K60 on XSX, at 4K resolution and 60fps, rather than having to choose either 4K or 60fps on the Xbox One X. This won’t apply to the XSS console, which is capped at 1080p resolution.

Car List

The car selection in Forza Horizon 4 is expansive and eclectic. While much of what you’ll find on the roster represents what you might encounter on the UK’s roads, there are more than a few vehicles that you’ll rarely see.

British manufacturers feature heavily, with cars from the Aston Martin Vulcan and McLaren Senna down to the humble Peel P50. You’ll also find vehicles that have a place in British culture, like the P50, the Reliant Supervan, and cars from the James Bond film series.

At launch, FH4 packed around 460 cars, but with both free and paid DLC this number is now over 700 – and growing each month.

Track List

As Forza Horizon 4 is an open-world game, it doesn’t have a track list per se. There are around 100 course locations on the map, all consisting of paths created by the roads and lanes themselves, routes through the off-road areas, or a mixture of both. You’ll also find drag strips dotted about too.

These are mostly relatively small courses, though the four main event series – Road Racing, Dirt Racing, Cross Country, and Street Scene – feature track layouts that consist of a significant proportion of the map.

In addition to these races, which consist of both circuits and point-to-point courses, there’s a number of activities around the map, including speed traps, drift zones, jumps and viewpoints for players to collect.

The Fortune Island and LEGO Speed Champions DLC packs bring further new areas, with new courses.

Critical Reception

Forza Horizon 4 is not only among the highest-rated titles in the entire Forza series, it’s one of highest-rated Xbox platform games of any kind, across all generations of the console family.

Whether on dedicated racing game outlets, general gaming outlets, or even in wider media, it’s difficult to find any review that isn’t glowing. If there are criticisms, they center on the fact there’s almost too much to do and the unrelenting barrage of information. However there’s also particular praise on the game’s visuals, car list, and sheer fun.

Achievements

As you’d expect, with so many things to do in Forza Horizon 4, there’s a veritable laundry list of Xbox Achievements. They range from the very obvious story completion milestones to things like buying a castle, winning a race in the world’s smallest car, or finding a forgotten classic in a barn.

There’s 55 Achievements in total, adding up to 1,000 Gamerscore for grabbing them all. In addition, the two DLC Expansion packs come with their own list of Achievements too. Fortune Island adds another 500GS in 24 Achievements, with LEGO Speed Champions contributing 30 more Acheivements for 500GS.
