New GT Sport E3 2016 Trailer Promising ‘The Future of Motorsports’ Arrives Early

In a slightly unexpected move, Sony has unveiled the latest Gran Turismo Sport trailer mere days before the year’s biggest gaming event. The title confirms this is indeed the footage intended for E3 next week, and while it contains a lot of familiar content for those who’ve kept track of our GT Sport coverage the last month, it does hold some welcome surprises.

One of the first things shown in the trailer – with the familiar Moon Over the Castle playing over top – is the Group B Mustang rally car. This evocatively-named category in GT Sport hasn’t been expanded on much yet, but this marks our first look at the car in motion, after previously being shown as an early-access pre-order bonus. It’s joined by a new Group 3 Mustang (shown at 1:26), which looks right at home amongst the other Polyphony-crafted race cars, like the Alfa 4C and Jag F-Type.

The trailer also expands on the social aspect of the game, with a substantial Timeline that keeps track of friends’ actions throughout the game. Racers will have an enlarged profile section as well, which houses plenty of interesting features. Of note are the Driver Class ranking, Sportsmanship Points, and Items:

Polyphony’s habit of using different types of grapes as mock-up names continues!

GTPlanet members will hear (and see) our very own Tom lending his commentary talents to the trailer shortly after that, with lots of footage from both the Copper Box event and last weekend’s exhibition in Japan. With those events acting as examples, Polyphony goes on to confirm the GT Sport Live broadcast feature will play host to weekly finals. After that, there’s a recap of both the livery editor (where it’s confirmed players will be able to share their creations) and Photomode Scapes. Eagle-eyed viewers will note El Capitan back in a Gran Turismo game, though only as a photo location.

With Sony pushing this out into the wild today, on the back of the confirmation of the PS4 Neo’s existence, we’re extra curious about what’s in store for GT Sport next week at E3.

What is wrong with GT Sport everyone?. What is wrong with you all Huh?. Gran Turismo Sport is one of the best racing games so far and yet there are complainers on this page who hate the game?. I will have to tell Kazunori Yamauchi and PD on you complainers for troubling them.

  2. breyzipp

LOL! What do you do when you get negative feedback on the sound of the game? You cut it off for the next trailer and replace it with a music track. Hahahaha clever move. No thanks PD, I will stick to Project CARS for some real racing and will look forward to FH3 for some chillout driving.

  3. HarVee

An Egyptian flag? First time I’ve seen that in GT. I Wonder if we’ll get any Egyptian ‘Scapes? A Mazda by the Aswan Cataracts or at the Nubian Village on Elephantine would be interesting.

I’d ask for a Lada 2107, the staple of Egyptian transportation, but the “Racing your car on the TV” philosophy is no longer a priority for this series it seems.

  4. ScotteDawg

A Mustang GT 3 huh? All well and good but, I saw a review on Facebook pitting a new Mustang against an Australian HSV (basically a Holden Commodore – HSV is to Holden as AMG is to Mercedes) and the HSV won out! Now, if PD made an HSV GT 3, me and most Australians would be VERY happy…

    1. ZEROTHEKNIGHT

Being able to have an event for Australian V8 Supercars against each other in GTS is Australians dream as i can see from your request :)

    2. ScotteDawg

It would just be appreciated if there was even ONE Australian car made Premium!

In GT4 there were only 2 Holdens (which is an arm of GM) and only 1 Ford, and that was a Tickford Racing car. What got my goat was that there were 2 FPV’s (FPV being Ford Performance Vehicles)!!!
I thought back then it would have been great to have HSV (Holden Special Vehicles) instead of just normal Holdens! But I was pleased because there was Australian content.

When GT5 hit the shelves, the 2 FPV’s were taken out but the Ford Racing car was still in there, along with the 2 Holdens. But they were still standard… OK, I was a little miffed with keeping those cars standard, but I understood the fact that not all cars could be made Premium. However, I was very annoyed that the 2 FPV’s were gone, and I’m not a Ford person!

Along came GT6 and lo and behold, nothing had changed for Australian cars! Despite requests in the relative forum here on GTPlanet and numerous other gaming sites, nothing was added and nothing was made Premium! At least we got the Mount Panorama Circuit! (Australia and, I think, only ONE other country had NO Premium cars in GT6!)

Unfortunately, the ATCC (V8 Supercars) is not an FIA race series, so I doubt we’ll be seeing any Australian content in GTSport, standard OR Premium! So, with fingers crossed, I say “Roll on GT7!” (I’m still getting GTSport though…)

    3. Tenacious D

You poor Aussies are probably the victims of market squeeze. Microsoft is practically made of money, so they can afford to get licenses that hardly anyone else can. I can’t think of any non-EA franchise that has Porsche besides Forza, for instance, so Australian cars have featured in Forza for a few games in the series, hoping to grab some market share down under.

SONY doesn’t have that luxury, so they have to maximize their market impact and profit margins. Everything that shows up in a Gran Turismo is the result of a business deal. And let’s face it, Aussie cars and motorsports don’t show up in many racing games period, so it’s evidently not a good investment for most developers. On top of that, there’s the whole BoP/homolo thing. I have no idea if Supercars would fit into GT3 or SuperGT racing without changing their specs a lot, making them kind of fantasy racers along the lines of the VisionGTs.

Heck, where’s ALMS or USTCC? I’d love to see the 2005 Ford GT in there, but I’m betting I won’t see it in Sport, might not see the new Ford GT either. It depends on how “legal” it is. But maybe GT Sport will be enough of a money maker for oddballs like us to find our representation in GT7. As with all things GT, we’ll see. ;D

    4. ScotteDawg

The thing about licencing an Australian car is simply asking the American parent company. There are only 2 companies – Ford and GM… How freakin hard can it be???

(If they want to add classic cars from Australia in GT7, Chrysler is a 3rd company, as we used to have a Chrysler plant that produced Aus spec’d cars from 1951 to 1978)

    5. Johnnypenso

I can’t think of another franchise outside of GT that has VGT’S.
I can think of another franchise outside of GT that has GT Academy.
I can’t think of another franchise outside of GT that can afford to create a console game almost exclusively for e@sports and taking photos.
I can’t think of another franchise outside of GT that can afford to wait 3 or more years after the launch of a new console to release their first game on that console.

How am I doing on the generalizations @TenD?

    6. Tenacious D

So, Mr Knowledge, how many racing games actually have Aussie cars in them? And of those, how many are basing their game on V8 Supercars?

Or is your assertion that Kaz is a mean guy? That should be an interesting answer. ;D

  5. Magic Ayrton

All gloss and no substance at this moment in time – If the game was that good, surely they would be promoting it by showing actual gameplay… Same old story.

  6. Jimmy_DA

Could someone pass me a bucket please. I feel like vomitting after watching that feel good crap!

    1. Tenacious D

I’m not sure what you’re trying to accomplish with that post, there.

I don’t agree with you. Quite the opposite.

You aren’t offering constructive criticism, or a desire for changes.

I don’t feel sympathy for a guy who wants to harf at a pretty darn slick and revealing trailer, giving us another glimpse of the game many of us are waiting for. We honestly want more of this.

I’m quite dubious that anything else would have made any difference in your reaction.

    2. Jimmy_DA

Take it serious much? Its a game, I was being commical but seriously the part where they all congratulated themselves being awarded the trophies didnt make you feel like vomiting?

I’ll see what happens after release, a promotion trailer only shows what they want us too see. Thats the real test – post release. But so far it looks more promising than I initially thought

    3. Tenacious D

Uhh… anyone want to vomit with this guy?

I don’t. This was evidently a pretty stiff competition among at least a few dozen pretty good drivers. Those three on stage were evidently quite exceptional, the two Japanese fellows in both England and Japan both. It was a FIA event, and they got FIA trophies, so that’s evidently something substantial.

What are you going to do when it’s several hundred people perhaps thousands at an event? And that’s just one location? Going to be a lot of clapping and backslapping going on, might want to skip it all…

  7. wvmgmidget

In the trailer it shows both the interior and exterior during the color selection for the purchase of a new car, does this mean we’ll be able to select the interior color?

  8. WyldAnimal

Hey, Where is the Rover and the Moon Missions… How about a Mars mission this time?

Yeah, a Mars Rally dirt track. I’d game on that!

  9. BrunetPaquet

Hopefully there’ll be black flags to disqualify bad drivers. By that I mean it for derby drivers and penalty abusive drivers.

    1. ScotteDawg

      And these other flags:-
Yellow (accident), Green (re-start after a full course yellow), Blue (someone wants to pass you) and White (one lap remaining) in particular! The red flag would, most probably, not be necessary in a game like this…
Add Drive Through penalties too! Seriously, if they can add a pace/safety car that pulls into the pits under it’s own steam, they can fiddle with a program to bring in a naughty driver!

    2. ScotteDawg

      Another thing I thought of…
If a vehicle’s driver forgets to refuel or doesn’t refuel enough, the vehicle should stop on the track (instead of limping over the finish line), thus causing a full course yellow to be employed! The removal of the offending car can either be done by flat-bed truck or track-side crane, both of which would take a bit of time but would add excitement to a race as no-one would be allowed to overtake another competitor or the pace/safety car until the green flag is waved…!

    3. BrunetPaquet

I’ve seen flags in the second trailer, I think. If I recall the race started in the trailer and there was a green flag when the pace car was going back into the pit.

    4. ScotteDawg

Yeah, not a green “flag” as such, it was a green light at the top of the screen, the normal GT way of starting a race…

I’d like to track marshals out there waving flags as well as HUD and UI lights… Hell, if they could do a guy waving a checkered flag at the end of every race on every track in GT6, how hard could it be for GTSport and GT7?

  10. Akiras Mantis

I really like that profile screen. And I’m very happy about ‘Sportsmanship points’ That’s gonna change things

    1. Johnnypenso

It has tremendous potential, genre changing potential, but it must be done with a proper balance. If it’s too punitive it’s going to drive away the casual users. If it’s not punitive enough it will become meaningless. I think it would also be a great feature to have some kind of reboot ability. I would guess that most console gamers are not familiar with that type of system and you can explain it to them until they’re blue in the face but it’s not the same as actually racing with it. The last thing you want is a whole bunch of people starting the game and driving in a similar fashion to the way they drove in the past only to learn that they are now penalized by being stuck with the smash-up Derby class player.

  11. Just The Stig

When I heard the Moon Over The Castle opera singer from GT4, I immediately said “YES!!” and started uncontrollably crying tears of joy and nostalgia. :’)

    1. ScotteDawg

That is something I didn’t want to know! I now have an image of a kid with wet skidmarks in his jocks…!

    1. GranTurismoFive

Rather disappointing if that is the maximum grid size. Project CARS allows up to 40. On consoles….

I can race with up to 99 other cars on raceroom. Yes it’s a PC title.

    2. ScotteDawg

Though 20 on the grid is good, I would have preferred 30 at the very least! They went from 6 to 16 when GT5 appeared and we were able to play on-line… The PS4 is a bigger animal now, so having 30 (even 32) cars on the grid would (should) be expected. 20 cars is no great leap, but it will make on-line gaming a bit more interesting for the Gran Turismo stalwarts!

    3. ZEROTHEKNIGHT

In the real Nurburgring – there are about 200 cars on the track with a separated categories X)

    4. Tenacious D

I run 24 car grids in my racers because anything more tends to run “off camera” anyhow. I’m sure 20 will be plenty. 16 is actually good enough if the field is fairly fast and not strung out, and the bots look to be improved in that area. If they’re mostly polite road rockets as in Assetto Corsa, this should be adequate.

  12. TomBrady

I’m super excited for GT Sport, so I don’t need a great trailer for convincing but to me, the trailers so far have been hella weak. Too much focus on stuff other than gameplay. This trailer is about 4 minutes and I think less than 2 minutes is actual gameplay. That’s just disappointing to me compared to past GT trailers which I watched several times over.

Still, I’m very happy with the graphics. They look incredible and so detailed up close. People just need to open their eyes because this is a gorgeous looking game.

    1. ZEROTHEKNIGHT

If there is no offline feature then we’re buying a game to be scrapped after a certain days ?

    2. TomBrady

They’ve already confirmed that it’s fully offline and features a full GT career mode, and arcade modes.

I mean really, did you actually expect them to go always online? PD has made some bad choices, but they’re no where near that stupid. Give them more credit than that

    3. MrWaflz55

It’s not a full career mode, it’s a racing school kinda thing to prepare newcomers for the world of ESports.

    4. Johnnypenso

There is no full career mode mentioned as of yet. Offline gameplay is limited to license tests, instructional/etiquette events and sector TT’s.

    5. ZEROTHEKNIGHT

So we’re waiting for a License Tests game & an online only entertainment of multiple cars on the track ?
If this is what GTSport will be – I’ll get REALLY angry at Kaz.
      Let’s hope that it won’t happen <:)

    6. Tenacious D

If nothing else, there will be an Arcade Mode. And it may be seriously beefed up to make up for lack of a full blown GT Mode. We just don’t know what we’ll be getting.

I’ll have to say that I’ve been doing nothing but playing the Arcade Mode equivalent in PCARS, AC – when the freaking thing works – and RaceRoom, and been having quite a blast with them. RR is a bit unfair though, since it has a pretty well darn built Event Maker for that, so I can make a racing season as long as I want.

As with all things GT, we’ll see. ;D

    7. 2clickswest

I’m at least hoping for an above mentioned arcade mode. I’ve been playing GT PSP for a while now, and the game despite being very empty still sucks you in. The equivalent of that in GT Sport would be enough imo.

  13. Sier_Pinski

Surprised to hear Woodkid music in an official GT trailer (song is called “Run Boy Run”).

    1. epic_apri_39

I was taken by surprise to hear it as well. I’m not sure if it’s a step in the right direction but it’s a step forwards from most of GT6.

  14. GTchicken

I am a longtime Gran Turismo fan, and first time ever, I am not planning to buy the next Gran Turismo (Gran Turismo Sport). After trying out Forza, Gran Turismo Sport seems disappointing. It has nice graphics, and perhaps physics also, but it’s not a compelling game. I hope Polyphony is working on Gran Turismo 7 with like 500 cars, all the tracks from the previous games, tune shop, etc.

  15. usielx313

Funny how they didnt show any damage….the future of racin…. I think we are getting indestructible cars.

This will be “the real photo mode simulator”!

    1. ArR29

The gameplay footage came from London event though. I doubt there will be proper cosmetic damage in the game, but let’s wait and see

  16. sirjim73

Slightly disappointed to have not made it into the trailer, no matter how many times i rewatch this in slow motion lol.

Glad to see and hear lots of Tom though – you nutter! ;)

    1. Tenacious D

My money was on even beefier dev kits, but that’s outstanding! Replays undoubtedly, but still!

God, put me in stasis till… well, till No Man’s Sky comes out. ;D

  17. damadmoneyman

at 2:30 same motto as assetto corsa’s trailer… lol

I wish they showcase the sounds more before the release..they little i heard was decent…

  18. Blackshiny

The music is back to the level of trailers of old, much better than the first reveal. Shame it gets compressed for youtube…

    1. TomBrady

It didn’t get compressed for youtube, youtube compressed it after the fact. That’s what youtube does. Youtube doesn’t let anyone put up decent quality video on it. Youtube is 5 mbps at 1080p, actual 1080p60fps game footage is about 150mbps.

  19. Rob-F1-Fan

What are “sportsmanship points” ? I guess its linked to whether you drive into people online??

  20. Isho

This is nice and all, but they better have done some major improvements on the horrible clutch system. Still cant accept that they havent done anything to it since GT5.

  21. liv4hardstyle

They really do a fantastic job making trailers. I just hope I’m not more impressed with the trailer than the actual game.

    1. yzfmike

Is it just me, or does GT seem to get you pulled in with the music. Forza seems flat, and well here you go.

    2. MeanElf

Not sure really. I only know that it hits that spot and pulls me back to when I first played GT just like they all have (and no, not like seeing it in 32-bit colour on a PS1)

    3. Tenacious D

I have to be the biggest emotional sap in the community, and my heart just turned to goo.

I know there are a lot of racing games, some excellent racing games, but there’s just something special about Gran Turismo. And this has every chance to be the best one yet. I am in love with this trailer, and can hardly wait for E3 to see more goodies. And turn to goo all over again. ;P

I know a lot of people here are meh – or worse – at GT Sport, but I can hardly wait for it. This will be actual racing, motorsports-slash-sim style! The cars will be roughly equal! The bots will be faster and it looks like they don’t spread out to fill the whole track! I’ve been asking for this for ten years!

This will be such a sweet Christmas present to myself. Kaz… you know what’s coming…

      BRING IT!! ;D

    1. Tenacious D

      Dude! Holding out!! D:

But I’m fine with trickle down details. If we knew everything, E3 would be such an anticlimax. Looking forward to every drip of info between now and release.

    2. jm79

      Cheers Kyle. Good to know.

Strange that after that freakishly long, maddening silence after the initial reveal, they seem to have really upped their game. Little tidbits every now and then, constant info. All honest gameplay footage, community engagement.

Absolutely love the new approach. Don’t think PD are getting enough props for this.
