Have you read Marc Priestley's book on being his mechanic at McLaren? Absolutely bonkers stories about the parties. Like waking up the next day and you're not even in the same country anymore, let alone hotel! 🤣

I haven't read the book but I've watched all of his videos on Youtube. Great guy and indeed he has some juicy stories.

Yes and what is frustrating is that those quirks and issues could be solved very easily with a Kunos update. I don't particularly like EVO. I believe they get the AI decent and the FFB decent too. It can become a great driving sim. But it won't be like AC1 where (almost) everything is moddable. I believe we can never do stuff that we do here... not even close. There won't be the same freedom.

AC is almost perfect. We control almost everything and can modify almost everything. But it has some blatant issues (that you and I mentioned) and I'd be 1000X happier to see Kunos fixing and updating those issues than any new EVO/ACC updates.

I'd pay 100 euros for AC1 again if those issues could be addressed.

And about your comment about AC1 being the best sim... yes.

Let's face it... LMU GT3 cars are very good, not sure about the hypercars... amazing kerbs. ACC has pretty bad FFB and bad kerbs. RF2 has horrible interface. RF1, GP4 and GTR are all good games but time has not been very kind to them. AC with Pure/SOL still looks as good as anything.

Whatever is causing the "numbness" and dead FFB on new sims, I don't know. Maybe the devs have created over complicated tyre models. Or perhaps the old sims like RBR and AC1 (and RF2 too) have such good driving feel because they were designed for 1st generation poor FFB wheels?

iRacing has pretty good FFB but it has serious flaws with losing car control completely... always when you get the oversteer slide... but it's only online and it doesn't drive as good as AC1. Nothing drives as good. Max knows.

You can't imagine how many hours I spent on GP4 and GTR2, my goodness. Watching the AI battle was so incredible. If AC could reach that level, I might go back to racing.

I think AC's FFB has only one small flaw: the gravel it's practically glue... In theory the car tends to sink as soon as it loses speed, but as soon as you touch it it's an automatic handbrake 👀

RF2 has the worst UI ever, but it's a good sim

RF2 ui is so god awful that it completely ruins that sim for me. I don't know why but it often loses my FFB settings occasionally... without any reason.

GP4 was amazing. I had at least 1000 hours of playing with that one back in the day. Great AI. I just recently installed it back but uhh... it looks very outdated and the driving is not comparable to AC1. And there's that annoying pedal issue with Thrustmaster which always requires tweaking your FFB settings before switching to it.

But F1 2020 (by Codemasters) has absolutely SUPERIOR ai to any sim. It handles DRS, ERS, rain, tyre wear, qualifying (no idiotic outlap slow cars slowing you down), blue flags, dynamic weather, tyre rules, Q1->Q2-> Q3 QF, safety car and pit tactics perfecly, AI difficulty can be made impossible (at least for an average sim racer like me), driver skill realism (always the correct AI drivers getting/fighting for the poles and wins)... you name it. Looks great and has very good presentation.

It only has a bit too aggressive ai position defending and they make your overtaking unrealistically difficult and are a bit too eager to crash you. But other than that the AI is mind blowingly good and it doesn't get enough credit from the sim racers how good and complete F1 game actually is (or was... as it's no longer on Steam). 2023, 2024 and 2025 are crap in comparison. I don't understand how it is a "simcade" as 90% of the things are way better done than on the "real sims". I guess the only criteria of a "sim" is how good the FFB is, huh?

Sure... some modern F1 cars by RSS or VRC probably drive better and AC1 FFB is superior. We don't really know... as we have no idea how the real F1 car FFB feels with all that modern electronics. Maybe that "lifeless" FFB on F1 2020 is pretty close? But either way, AC is not capable to simulate modern F1 rules and it has way too many handicaps for me to even consider of creating or playing any post 2012 seasons. How is that even a "simulation" if it misses half of the modern F1 rules? We can't even have flying starts and creating a Indycar is impossible too.

I don't race anything but F1 most of the time. I only hotlap other cars on AC but I've done a few races on other sims too. LMU ai is pretty decent. AMS2 too. ACC ai is not horrible, either. But generally we don't have great ai's on any of the "real sims". EVO ai is an afterthought at the moment. It's ridiculously bad and of course it will improve a lot (hopefully).

Still... it's strange as the ai's haven't really improved much in 10 years. FFB has just gotten worse. So much emphasis is put into the graphics which don't really matter to me after certain quality was achieved with AC1 and RF2. That 3% extra eyecandy just creates performance issues to many people with a bit older PC's.

AC1 is still overwhelmingly the most popular sim on the daily Steam stats by a huge margin which proves that most of the sim racers play offline. LMU doesn't even have offline championship and hotlap modes... it's all about online stuff to challenge iRacing. Not acceptable for that price, imho.

If Kunos just updated AC1 issues it would be the only sim we ever need.

Talking about F1 cars.. there's something I've been thinking about ever since I bought AC1. Remember Gerhard Berger's slide in Monaco? Well, in AC1, it's often difficult to control an F1 car like that. Rotation is crucial in certain situations, but it's as if the car just lost control without rotating first. Obviously, I've never driven an F1 car irl, and I know they have fantastic traction, but even with hours and hours of practice I couldn't do it.

Look at 2:17, I also talk that 🤔

Yes I remember that but that is an anomaly and kinda "fluke". The car was probably weirdly set up and the surface was slippery. That's pretty much the only time you can see F1 cars sliding... and Berger probably added some showmanship there too. :) Sure in the early 80's you'll see Keke sliding on the rain in Monaco on several occasions. In the 70's probably even more. We also remember Schumi and Kimi occasionally sliding... and sometimes even modern F1 cars have occasional slides... but aLWAYS in very slow speeds.

You'll have those in AC too... try VRC 2005 and 2007. I think those cars drive very well.

Sure we can see some rare "safes" from higher speeds too but 99,99% of times the grip on open wheelers is very much on/off

Hypercars on LMU are the best, seriously. And I can't wait to see what they'll do with the LMP3 since we don't even have one good mod for AC lol

Ok. Maybe I just suck then. :D

When you lock up the brakes the LMU hypercars slingshot sideways immediately. I wonder if that is actually realistic behavior. Could be. I have to watch some real life footage. Or then I haven't set up the car properly. Haven't driven them that much yet.

LMU GT3 cars are amazingly enjoyable to drive compared to ACC anyway. I have no idea if they're more realistic or not but I really love the driving feel. LMU indeed has a lot of potential.

I think AC's AI is a hit and miss. In my case, either the AI doesn't race (sometimes only 1/3 of the grid starts, they get stuck behind the stationary opponents and then they get automatically teleported to the pits for retirement) or if they race they make a bit of a mess. I won't deny that I've given up now. Every now and then I race alone for some time attacks or track days, but nothing more.
Have you tried Nuzzi's rolling start app? I find I have those issues you mentioned some cars. Others are just plain slow off the line (DRM cars in particular), I found the rolling start app does fix quite a few issues related to race start retirements. I know none of Nuzzi's apps are perfect but I think one day they'll get there (and CSP hopefully). I do recall a quick conversation over at RD/Overtake with Stefano where he said he'd fixed all the AI issues but wasn't going to share it, so somewhere out there is a fixed AC AI.

That is a good idea
i loved these details on the track toys.
please do not remove them.

and i don't see many people reacting good on removing it.

@Masscot
Can you upload a full update on the JCW ?
I have seen a lot of work went into that one.
thank you guys!

This one is also a great app for improving AI race starts and consistency

This video helped me a lot:

After changing the brake sensitivity setting he mentions I went from locking up twice a lap to... locking up once every two laps lol

I've just been doing some work on the DTM 1995 cars by F302, is there a bug at all with the Alfa's that causes all the grid to only load up under the Nanni #7 skin? I've got everything coming back as correct when i do a custom showroom preview, but then when i click on each skin for the AI and go into the race the entire Alfa grid is only showing the number #7 skin. Is there a phantom ext_config file in a folder which may be causing this issue?

Damn why is Jeffrey Epstein watching me race

Easy fix, go into track data file, go to surfaces.ini and change damper setting to less, also you can change grip level of the gravel. Dead easy. Whilst there realise kerbs are mostly silly slippy and change that too if you want.

But also as its a sim racing forum, don't end up in the kitty litter!
No seriously, follow my instructions and your problem is solved..

Whilst i am here, anyone know what to do with the obj skidmark file? Hate the way skidmarks are removed every 2 goes on the tracks, opened obj file in blender but its just like solid blocks. Any advise appreciated.

I might have accidentally woken up very heavily on my autistic side today. Decided to some cleaning up in my AC folder by going from heaviest skin folder to the lightest, and boy were there some full skin folders.

Either way, While i was cleaning them out i made myself an little spreadsheet for series and skins that i was keeping, and so far i have this. It's not much but i'm working trough my Kunos AMG GT3 folder rn and apparently i have over 200+ skins for that car alone. Many being duplicates or those horrible fictional ones that i don't enjoy having anymore.

It's not the best spreadsheet but i am not aware of any other spreadsheet around that "documents" liveries for AC.

I raced them a long time ago, I remember them being quite understeering (maybe it's due to my skill issues LOL)

Thanks, I didn't know that... unfortunately (or fortunately) I've never touched the tracks 👀

Always nice to see more attempts at categorizing bits of AC  .
I have 2 links bookmarked that I use for finding skins for Kunos cars (1 I found through google, can't remember where I found the other). Neither looks like it was updated in the last few years though, so it's just a "partial resource".

Try with:
Settings/assetto corsa/video/world details = maximum
Settings/CSP/skidmarks FX/save skidmarks beetween game launches = enabled (other options = default)

@timetoo22
once you have some skids built up, exit and then put the skidmarks.obj in the your_track base folder and they should stay.
be sure to then turn off the obj generation (uncheck save as obj)
