That lap, was staggering.
STAGGERING. 6 tenths, to Vettel.

Lewis is on another level this season. The races he’s put together and the quali laps have been out of this world. That lap was on a par with his Silverstone pole.

Just staggering, I still can’t believe he managed 6 tenths, over the fastest car on Vettel’s strongest track...

That was an epic lap. And Hamilton/Verstappen/Vettel is going to make for a nail-biting first corner...

Sauber's new signing looks quite good too.

Hopefully no sandwich this time.

Max just gave an after quali interview and said his engine was far from optimal. He had to deal with strange unpredicatble behavior of his engine.

I think this season is the closest we have ever seen for the last decade or so in terms of performance. Merc & Ferrari and sometimes Red Bull are very close, and the tide shifts from race to race. I find it ironically that the term "fastest car" has been showing up a lot lately. Certainly more than 2014- 2017.

On qualifying : it is surprising that Merc appeared to be the quickest here, but that pole lap was a wonder :)

As per the Fox Sports / Sky commentators, it appears that Mercedes are just doing a better job prepping for that lap.

They were doing very slow outlaps... saving the tires for the hot one, as it's a long and hard lap on the tires. Ferrari were putting a lot of heat in them on those outlaps. May have been losing performance by midlap (second sector) due to that?)

Merc were keeping the tires, so cool that they got it completely wrong on their second set of laps... Lewis had some issues which caused him to scrub his second lap. Bottas did not improve.

But it just clicked for Lewis on that monster of a first lap. Put into perspective, both Lewis and Max were nearly 7/10ths up on their team-mates. Vettel and Raikkonen were under 2/10ths apart. Shows you the quality of Kimi, even in his waning years, to give Vettel such trouble.

It will be an interesting start to the race. I hope the leaders get away clean. Won't be disappointed to see a lead swap within the first few corners, but the Merc has a good power advantage over the RBR. If Max sticks himself between Vettel and Hamilton and status quo holds, that's bad news for Seb. If Seb can get around Max, then the Ferrari might just have the race pace to beat the Merc over race distance with some creative pit strategy.

Latest Met Office weather forecast... 10% chance of rain, that's probably because you can never say 0% at this time of year in Singapore. There's a chance it will have rained during the early afternoon making for a 'green' track but there'll be nothing left of any rainwater by the time the race starts later on. 1900 local time?

Last season it was close and I maintain that on balance, the Ferrari was the better package.

This season it seems clear that the Ferrari is the better all-round package. And Lewis has pulled a 10x point gap when compared to last year.

The cars and teams are closer than they’ve ever been, but Lewis has pulled away from Vettel and, at the moment at least, he has no answer

Vettel needs to close the point gap here and Japan in order to really stand a chance of taking it to the last race.
If I was a betting man, I’d put Lewis on for the win with Vettel p2. I just don’t think Max has the race pace or the engine to really fight them over a two hour period and as Lewis showed us at Monza, he’s more than up for a fight, wheel to wheel

Hamilton's lap was great, but Verstappen's was just phenomenal. The guy who decides what we get to see on TV should be sacked.

Considering the car VER has compared to HAM it's out of this world!

No doubt this track suits Red Bull a little better than most of the other ones, but still super impressive.

Probably 6/10 of races Ferrari can be quicker than the Merc, and only by just! It's incredibly close between them, and it's unfair for both to call one the "fastest" and the other "inferior". I believe they are as tied as any F1 machines ever were.

Last year was different. Merc had 15 pole, and Lewis won 8 of his 11, where Vettel won only 1 of his 4 poles. Clearly Merc had an advantage there, and Ferrari mostly ended up following the Merc and losing performance due to the dirty air.

This year is equal. You never know who's gonna get pole, and I believe they share 6 poles each of them. But while admittedly there was a bit of mistakes from Seb, Lewis has found lady luck beside him. The only game changer was Germany where Seb had "anybody's" crash and Lewis won without overtaking any of the "big three" on track. Other than that I think it's pretty equal season.

Crazy lap from Lewis and Max. Jesus. Hamilton’s lap was just inch ****ing perfect. Apex after apex after apex was nailed on that lap. Just sublime seeing that man drive a car on the limit. Max’s lap was also stunning. Big gap to Ricky.

Its gonna be a great race.

ESPN's coverage didn't show a single second of Max's lap, which is a shame. Lewis' lap was one for the books, but considering the car (er, engine) Max was driving his might've been just as good

Apparently rain is incoming, will possibly hit at the end of the race.

Safety car quota nice and early.

Yellow Flag came out on the screen before Vettel passed. Wonder if he’ll have to give up position.

Looks like Ocon did that himself

Why is the first thing everyone says when there's a collision is "well he shouldn't have been there"... But he was. And the other driver knows it. So act accordingly. Perez is a bulldog.

Can you imagine the debrief later?

Nice of Perez to apologize.

Exactly what I'm talking about. Perez just said on radio he didn't see him. Really? It's lap 1. Assume cars are all around you lol

Alonso's view shows there was plenty of room

The yellow was behind them, Vettel was already past Max when the safety car started. No way Vettel needs to give that up.

Perez said he didn't know he was there and was surprised by Ocon and apologized, but yeah Perez is super mean so clearly it was on purpose

Sirotkin trying an alternative front wing configuration
