but about everything that's stolen, done without love, in the pursuit of easy money, "likes," and fame.
I'm an incurable old romantic, or maybe times have just changed and it's normal now, but I can't get over it.
I'd like to know how you see this world these days, even the younger ones who just started out.
Sorry for the off-topic 🙏
Well we see it with eyes full of disgust, but there's a fine line between being a victim of it and doing something about it. And thankfully there are still a lot of people who are doing something about it.
If we check the F1 side, we have
2015->2018 ACFL doing mods but the 3d model comes from roblox
2019->2020 ACFL vs ACF1 the battle between pay mod vs free mod
In between simdream came in and saw this battle, and thought "what If I do ACF1 job of converting cars using whatever physics i find but put a price tag like ACFL"
So they spammed mods from all eras of F1 like that
2021->2022 Simdream reached for the sun and got burned. Stopped doing conversions. We need a successor. Modding becomes more accessible after people realized that modding wasn't an "elite" thing seeing what simdream made.
What has come out of it?
The same thing. Free vs Pay.
Spmod decided to be the spiritual successor of simdream with his Patreon, taking physics left and sound engine right without asking anyone's permission. While Deploy stayed on the free side for the love of the game and produce a better modern formula mods that can look RSS formula hybrid 2025 in the eyes.
It'll be a perpetual "Pay vs Free" where people come and go but there will always be people that comes for the love of $ and people irritated by it who will start doing mods for the love of the game.
As for Tom leaving and his arguments, i do understand him a lot. Thankfully I avoided that hassle of thinking that way especially in a community like Assetto Corsa. For example, I helped a lot of people with modding going as far as to write a simple modding guide to cover obscure knowledge that was hard for newbies to find. This allowed the rise of many part time discord modders, like bubba who did a 2014 season, forbys who did a 2009 season and other classic cars, deploy also uses some knowledge from that guide. But I don't bother expecting anything in return. I don't really care they do afterwards and if things get the respect it deserve, the thing I'm getting in return are F1 mods, which is my goal ultimately since I'm a lazy person I don't want to do every car I want to drive there's too many. Better offload that to other people to do the work for you, just need to give them a little push.
I also don't get a penny from the mods I'm doing. I tried putting a donation link for my 2008 mod in gtplanet despite 20k download no one gave me a penny. So I had to tell my wife and kids that we would drink water and eat ice cubes for the month. Shame on you gtplanet !
I did the same experiment on overtake.gg with the mak corp mod, to my surprise someone actually gave a donation (overtake.gg >>>>>> gtplanet) the bad news is that I never expected someone to send money so the throw away PayPal account was locked after seeing money for the first time in 5 years and asked for my identity if I want to reclaim those 5$, i don't do money laundering, but trading my privacy for 5$ isn't worth it (well the truth lies in the fact that i don't want to pay taxes, so I don't want to have the IRS spying on me) so those 5$ are staying where they are.
We are now homeless, and eating water to survive because none of you wanted to give me a penny, but my wife always tell me that it's okay, because all the money in the world doesn't make happiness, having its name next to mak corp name does. Well she's right, i might not have a Bugatti to catch girls on the street, but playing it off like a random arch Linux user and telling every girl i meet "btw did you know I made an F1 mod with mak corp name in it" makes them all go sign a mariage certificate on the double. That's how I got my wife.
